Tom Klinedinst of Manchester Township auctions off a toy truck held for display by Butch Landis at Mt. Royal Auction in Dover Township in 2007.
I recently received a news item from freelance writer and friend Barb Krebs about an event coming up next week in southern York County. We'll be running this in Tuesday's Weekly Record edition, but since the event takes place that day, I wanted to get the word out sooner!
Barb writes:
Wehrly’s Auction, on Snyder Road in Codorus Township, near Glen Rock, will hold the fifth annual auction for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.
Local bakers will donate cakes and other homemade items that will be auctioned to benefit the Memphis, Tenn.,-based hospital and its work with children who have cancer.
Since the tradition began in 2004, the auction has raised more than $18,000 for St. Jude, auctioneer Scott Wehrly said.
Auction activity begins at 2 p.m. with the sale of lawn and garden items, antiques and collectibles.
The first year of the auction, the father-and-son team of Charlie and Scott Wehrly sold neckties as part of an effort sponsored by the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association. A bidder would buy a tie and hand it back to be sold again until they reached a total of $1,500.
The following year, they asked auction regulars to bake and donate cakes and raised $4,000.
The generosity of people willing to help and the number of cakes and other homemade items continues to increase, interest continues to grow and the amount of money raised is higher every year, Wehrly said.

Love the auctions and a year ago found my greatest bargains--at Toomey's. One is a large, beautifully framed Wyeth print--one of my favorites--that originally came from the Phil. Art museum. The other is a small, original George Mclaine snow scene drawing done in 1940. Got 'em both for $35.51!
