Have sssssome fun at Nixon Park

snake.jpg
Bill Styer and his reptiles are a big part of Repile Week at Nixon Park, but 4-year-old Jake Sampson of Salem, Va., wasn't quite sure he wanted to experience the 75-pound Burmese python in this photo by Bil Bowden.
I mentioned being at Nixon Park for a hike this past weekend.

What I forgot to say was that it was the beginning of "Reptile Week" there, which continues through Sunday.

We got to see a cobra (behind glass, of course) with its hood up, as well as a huge pair of Burmese pythons, a couple of really neat tortoises, and a variety of smaller snakes.

You should definitely check it out, especially if you have kids who love creepy-crawlies. They're not my first choice, but my daughter loves them. She wasn't with us Saturday, but we're planning to take her out this week so she can get some snake love too.

(She's also doing the Keystone Activity Zone kids' summer letterboxing challenge, where she has to visit 30 parks around the county and get a stamp in her book. So we'll do that while we're down there!)

Anyone else been to Reptile Week, this year or earlier years? Or, anyone doing the letterboxing? We're off to a little bit of a slow start with it, but we have till Sept. 12, so I think that's OK.
