Here's a Yorkism that, for some reason, has cropped up a lot in conversations I've heard lately.
It's especially appropriate for summer - you know, time for road trips. Windows down, stereo up, maybe playing your favorite song.
But what happens when you ask a Yorker how to get somewhere?
He (or she) might tell you to take "the" such-and-such road.
You've heard it before: "She lives out the East Berlin Road." "Turn on the Druck Valley Road." "We were out on the Jug Road." Those are some I've heard within the past week.
The first two, I can kind of understand. Because not only is it called East Berlin Road, it's also "the road" to East Berlin. Same with Druck Valley, East Prospect and other "place-name" roads.
But Jug Road? I don't know. I can't justify that one, I guess. Any thoughts?
Maybe this post does not belong here, who knows? In my first 10 minutes ever in York County, a "gentleman" playing speed racer in a mid 1990's black Toyota Camry spun out of control near mile marker 10 on US 83 and struck my vehicle on the passenger side, causing my two little girls in the back to panic and cry. The "gentleman" regained control of his vehicle and sped away, leaving my vehicle disabled in the fast lane- there were witnesses. I hope someone will turn this guy in. Older white male, somewhat heavy set, with an older faded balck Toyota Camry. His car should have front end damage and the state troopers would like to have a chat with him.
Not sure if these have been mentioned before. but allow me to add two other Yorkisms. 1) Referring to a current place by what used to be there (business or person's residence). And 2) This may be PA Dutch-wide but finishing a sentence with "then." Example: I'll do it then.
