Reader responses: David Byrne and tattoos

It stands for "All values (from zero to infinity) are less than Love." See more supergeek tattoos here.

I was hoping for more response on my intentions to see David Byrne in concert and perhaps get a tattoo of some of his song lyrics.

I wanted to give a big "thank you" to my sister Louise, whose husband sports a massive number of tattoos, for some good advice on safety, should I go that route.

And I want to say hi! to new commenter Laura, who is also a David Byrne fan and a soon-to-be Yorker. Laura, if you're going to the show, you'll have to let me know.

Meanwhile, in other concert news and weird relatedness, one of my staffers, Matt, went to see Smashing Pumpkins in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday... a day after I posted about a real-life pumpkin smashing!

Hi Joni,
I was a little shocked, I thought for a minute that was your arm and then I remembered yours isn't that hairy. I like the tattoo though.
Love, Weez

I dont understand how that means all values are less than love.
what does that sign mean followed by the xdx i understand the Please explain?

-stephanie

Curious to know why "xdx". Can you please explain?

it's calculus, the integral of x from zero to infinity.

I saaw it and i really liked it , buut i doont understaand ' xdx ' . Caan yoou pleaase explaain it to mee pleaase ?

The " Typically dx means the delta, or change in x.
Since we're dealing with an integral, in this case dx means something more like very small change or intervals of x. (infinitely small)

I would like to point out that the poster has left out a key idea of an integral by stating "All values (from zero to infinity) are less than Love."... integral actually means the area represented by or the sum of all values.

In this specific case, as Jessica has stated, we have the integral of x from zero to infinity.
You can reword this concept as something like... The sum of all numbers from zero to infinity. Remember the numbers do not have to be whole numbers, so 4.2, 3.14, and 1.00000001 are included... use infinitely small gaps!

Personally, when I read this tattoo I read it as:
"Love is greater than the sum of everything."

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!
