Sad breaking news

Sad news today, folks, in the world of local and food-related items. (Mark, I know you’ll especially not like this one.)

The York Peppermint Pattie, which used to be made in York but was most recently made in Reading at a Hershey plant, will soon be made in Mexico.

I’m definitely disappointed. I am not someone who is categorically against production moves if they keep a company afloat economically, but this one hits pretty close to home.

About Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

    Joan,
I read the story yesterday on the net and almost cried. This does hit very close to home. Along with Barbells, the Peppermint Pattie was one thing that Yorkers could be proud of (among other things I am sure). The outsourcing happening in the US is becoming too easy a quick fix for financial problems. Now this puts more US workers out of jobs, redirects US dollars to other countries and makes the US more of a service oriented economy. This may be a small thing in the larger scope of the world, but the ramifications add up. With all of the food stuff problems happening around the world (China – Milk) I really question the true logic behind this move. A sad, sad day for Yorkers and another blemish on the ‘bottom-liners’ of the world. Sorry to ramble but I just am getting frustrated daily by the disparaging news coming out of the US in regards to job losses and outsourcing. Maybe the ‘stimulus scrapple’ should look a little more closely at home and fix things within before financing Spa weekends and private jets.

Why don’t we all start making noise about our local and US companies moving out of our country?
I recall President Obama, in his finacial and recovery speech last week, specifically say that companies who move production out of the US, will no longer receive their TAX CREDITS! Does that not mean anything or are the foreign savings greater than the credits? Maybe the penalty needs to be stiffer than just tax credits.
Perhaps all small to large towns and cities should forward articles about their companies leaving for other cheaper means of production, leaving US citizens unemployed. As for the quality of the candies and food, I wonder what the foreign ingredients will be? Don’t You?
Good Bye to another one of our long time friends and comfort treats! I guess I need to purchase a few of the real YORK PEPPERMINT PATTIES….WELL, MAYBE MORE THAN JUST A FEW!

York Peppermint patties will never be the same made in Mexico……get use to making your own…I really have a hard time with Mexicans. Simply put, I don’t trust their DNA.

The new York PP have hit the shelves. I found them at Target – made in Mexico.
