Meet Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Improving York County, a little at a time
All of the third-graders at Norman A. Trimmer Elementary this year had to do two hours of community service, preferably with their families. Many of the kids in our neighborhood took the fundraising route – making snack mix or brownies … Continue reading

April showers bring May flowers; March showers bring… hail!
Yesterday’s sudden hail storm and possible tornado were among our biggest stories online this weekend. I was off for the day, celebrating Sarah’s birthday with family at a game-playing party, and we couldn’t believe it when the hail suddenly started … Continue reading

It’s been 30 years
I took the photo above in January 2008, as Hubby and I were driving home from New Year’s festivities in Mount Joy. We were rambling along the river, and I couldn’t miss the chance to capture this iconic York County … Continue reading

A look back at fry-day
You might remember that back in February, I asked where you like to get your fastnachts. Well, in a Weekly Record feature that just ran this week, we asked people to share their fastnacht recipes. Ohhh do I wish I … Continue reading

Just beyond York County’s borders
The Star Barn is just outside York County, in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County. It’s a landmark I remember driving past often as a kid, while taking my dad to the Harrisburg airport for business trips and things. Well, now … Continue reading

… and Happy Birthday, Mom!
Yesterday was my daughter Sarah’s birthday… and today is my mom’s! I had tried to wait and make Sarah a birthday gift to my mom back in 2000, but it didn’t work out. Last night, we went out to Daddy-O’s … Continue reading

Happy Birthday, Sarah!
My little girl is 9 years old today. Happy birthday, Sarah! I love you! Chris took this picture last night as she was getting into bed. It was her last night being “8.” She’s hugging Mr. Bill, and both of … Continue reading

Just say whoopie!
As in “whoopie pie,” that is. I’ve been wanting to write about these local treats for a while now. Last week, the Friends of the Collinsviile Library sold them as part of a “Pi Day” fundraiser (Pi Day being March … Continue reading

Talking Pennsylvanian
Got this in an e-mail from my mom. I had posted a version of this before, but with several new readers, and new posts from me on some of these topics, I thought I’d share this version too. Talking Pennsylvanian … Continue reading

Spring has… sprung?
OK, so who got their free Rita’s Water Ice yesterday for the first day of spring? I didn’t. Too cold! I did wait in line last year, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it this time. Meanwhile, in … Continue reading
