This one is easy and fun, brought to you by my friend and former coworker Megan. Bonus points: Comment and tell me either (a) why you voted the way you did or (b) if you think the are both valid but describe two different things - and if so, why?

Making them on a GRILL in an aunt's restaurant in Juniata Co.many years ago moved me from toasted cheese to GRILLED .
My vote is for grilled cheese. When you make this sandwich you "grill" it in a pan, hence the grilled cheese sandwich. Toast is made in a toaster as separate pieces of bread.
When I was a kid, my mom would make this sandwich in the toaster oven. She'd toast it on one side and then flip it over and toast the other side. My brother and I called it toasted cheese. My grandmother actually still makes her toasted cheese in the toaster oven. Even though I grill it in a pan now when I make it, I still call it toasted cheese. Drives my husband crazy, haha.
I've always called it a toasted cheese sandwich, but I have no idea why. I can't remember what my mom calls it. Is it called 'toasted' in York County, or did I get that from my dad's side of the family, which is from Tennessee? (You can just imagine THAT made for some interesting differences in semantics growing up! LOL)
Even though they are grilled in a pan, if you are from York, they HAVE to be called "toasted cheese sandwiches". That's just the way it is! :)
