A scrapple must-read

Hubby sent me the most amazing blog tip today. Turns out our friends at another “York” news organization – The New York Times – have posted an amazing column about our favorite slab meatscrapple.

And it all starts with an 1872 letter to the editor, whose writer proclaimed that in trying economic times, scrapple, a beloved food in Pennsylvania, was “one of the best substitutes for meat that I know of.”

The best part? It starts with “Get a young pig’s head…”

Let the great scrapple debate begin. Among other things, what do you think about it as a “substitute for meat,” or, as a different letter-writer called it, “culinary fraud upon the stomach?” (I’m with that guy. Scrapple – eww!) However, if you love it, I might have found the perfect Christmas present for you.

    It’s funny, because, in a related matter, I also took a phone call today from a reader that turned into a discussion of entrails.

    I love this blog! Except your photo looks more like overly fried donuts or sausage than scrapple. Scrapple might well be “a culinary fraud upon the stomach” but give me two slices once a week or so during the winter and I’m in hog heaven. Not as any meat substitute though–just cause it’s good eatin’.

    Scrapple!!!!!!!!!!I miss it!!! I want it!!! I need it!!! If it is a fraud upon the stomach, I am not pressing charges!!! WOOOHOOO!!! One thing to bring out my comments is just this!!!     I have never had that, or puddin’, but by the looks of it I’d be more apt to eat scrapple over puddin’. Now, hominy, that’s what I’m talking about!
