About this blog
My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Gettysburg: Home of a big battle and a silent Y?
This installment of Yorkisms actually breaks the rules a little bit – we’re traveling a little bit west of the York County border! Friend, former coworker and blog reader Beth, though, pointed out this to me, in response to my … Continue reading

You know what I haven’t had in a while?
I was thinking. You know what I haven’t had in a while? A good hot dog. In fact, I haven’t had any hot dogs lately, because I’m back on the eating-healthy-and-exercising wagon for the new year. But I was going … Continue reading

Crazy things the Concilio/Otto family does
So, Hubby and I like used books. A lot. In fact, we have a fairly profitable and fun hobby/side business of buying and reselling used books. It’s something to do, it makes us a bit of extra money, and we … Continue reading

ABCs of York County: C winner, and vote for the best D
So the winner for the best C of York County is… Chicken-corn soup! This one has made frequent appearances before on the blog. And it’s definitely a county classic! (A shoutout, also, to Central Market, which came in a close … Continue reading

The Susquehanna Trail – the Road of Never-Ending Delight?
At the end of 2008, Jim McClure’s York Town Square blog featured a big post looking at the Susquehanna Trail as it heads north through the county. In it, he mentions an unusual publication. He quotes from a 1997 YDR … Continue reading

A good Yorkism for winter
Here’s a Yorkism that’s especially good for this time of year, when it gets icy. It’s not “slippery” out. Oh, no. It’s slippy. Yes, this is another saying I’m guilty of using. In this case, I argue that it’s just … Continue reading

Waffles and chicken, the definitive recipe
Well, as promised, I got a waffles-and-chicken “recipe” from my friend Megan. (Thanks, Megan!) The funny thing is, I could have totally figured this one out for myself, but I thought it had to be more complicated. Megan says. “Waffles … Continue reading
