Do you remember Avalong’s?

A reader, Kathy Becker, wants to know who remembers Avalong’s near what is now the York Galleria.
She said, “It had a restaurant, ice cream parlor and two miniature golf courses to choose from.”
Jim McClure has some great memories from the Avalong dairy on his York Town Square blog, including something I didn’t know. There’s a rumor out there that broasted chicken was first introduced to the county at that restaurant!
Broasted chicken; now that’s a subject for a future post. For now, do you remember Avalong’s, which had its offices at what we now call Christmas Tree Hill at the Mansion or the Meadowbrook Mansion, as pictured above?

About Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

A similar Dairy Restaurant in Red Lion was Warner’s…no miniature golf but a similar restaurant.

I only remember it as the Meadowbrook Restaurant.

I remember it!! Best broasted chicken and milk I ever had. Also had a drive-in area and the food was delivered to your car. What memories!!!

AvaLong’s was named for Ava Long.
The restaurant had the best broasted chicken and salads with hot bacon dressing!

I remember the drive up area where they delivered to your car. Mom, sisters and I were laughing so hard one time when we were trying to order we had to pull out and go to another speaker to re-order. I guess you had to be there. They had the best shrimp basket and fries. Also had great apple dumplings as I recall. Used to go there with my first serious b-friend in his convertable mustang. Later in life took my kids there miniture golfing and to the driving range. Now you would hit the galleria if you drove balls there. Great memories. Thanks for bringing them back.

As a long-time absentee from the York scene, now back, I enjoy reading these histories. Now I have a curious question. At the Isaac’s in that area there is a small stream. Was that water there and a part of the farm when it was in operation?

How can anyone around my age or older NOT remember Avalong’s? I think I brought it up in a former post. What I know was that they sold out to Rutter’s who ran it for a few years before they shut it down. I know this becasue at Rutter’s Restaurant #1 on Lightner Rd, we made Broasted Chicken with the Avalong Recipe. Was identical, never had any better Broasted Chicken than Avalong’s/Rutters. Because of all the revising of the area it is actually hard to discern exactly where the old driving range and restaurant stood. Have to agree on the Shimp Basket comment too. Yes, York food has clogged my arteries…YUM!

I remember they had the best clam chowder soup. It was more like corn soup than the usual expected kind of clam soup. Never had anything there that I didn’t like. Spent many weekend date nights there eating one of there yummy sundaes. We loved the curb service too. Oh for the good old fashioned Mom and Pop local resturants of yesteryear!

My mom happens to be one of those people who saves everything. The other day she found a box of golf scorecards. There were several from Long Golf Center, which I had never heard of before. She said that she and my dad took my brother mini-golfing there many times and that it was a nice place. She also said that there were two mini-golf courses to choose from.
