What is iconic in York County? The last word on the ABCs

Thank you all again for participating in the ABCs of York County series. I had a lot of fun and it definitely brought out some great feedback from you guys – and built some new loyal readers, I hope!
To cap us off, I asked some of the other staffers here at the York Daily Record for suggestions about what THEY consider icons in York County. It was neat, because some, like me, are York “lifers” and others are relatively new to the area.
Kara, niche publications editor, gave me a whole list! The Shoe House, Route 30 traffic, York Fair, Spring Grove paper mill smell and the York Daily Record/Sunday News. (Good choice on that last one – I should’ve suggested that for the best Y!)
Ellen, a features copy editor who hails from Nanticoke, Luzerne County, likes how we talk. She says, “People always say ‘awhile’ instead of ‘now’ here. Like: ‘I’m going to bed awhile.’ I’ve never ever heard that before. I noticed people use ‘then’ after everything unnecessarily. ‘Are you coming over then?’ I haven’t heard ‘then’ and ‘awhile’ used in conjunction though! But I bet it happens.” (Wow, talk about Yorkisms! I’ve written about “then” and “awhile” before, as well as then’s cousin, “once”!)
Brent, one of our business reporters, is originally from Berrysburg, in northern Dauphin County. He says, “It’s odd to find that the best burrito by far in central Pennsylvania/northern Maryland is in a relatively recent startup in West York (and now Dallastown) about 10 minutes from my house. It’s Robburritos. I have yet to have a better one anywhere — or the salsa for that matter. York has comparable food to other places around the region, but nothing that stands above and beyond like Robburritos.” He also says that when he and his wife (FlipSide editor Laura) have out-of-town guests, they like to take them to Roburritos.
Thank you, YDR friends, for sharing your thoughts on York’s “ABCs!”
Finally, here’s a secret! If you live locally, keep an eye on your newspaper this fall. Word is, there might be a special surprise that people who’ve been following along will like.

About Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!
