Coleslaw: If you don’t mind the smell… maybe it isn’t bad!

I do like bringing up foods like coleslaw every so often on the blog, because it seems like every time I do, I get strong responses one way or another.

Tracey says, “Ya know? I can’t remember ever having tried any form of coleslaw as long as I’ve been alive, but I’ve known for just as long that ‘I don’t like it.’ It just doesn’t look OR smell delightful to me.”

I admit I’m pretty much the same way about the looks of it, but then again, I’m not into mayonnaise, so I’m interested in hearing about recipes that make a “cabbage slaw” without it, if there are any. I believe Jo had suggested using mustard, which might be OK. I mean, the cabbage itself can’t be THAT bad, can it? I would guess that the smell, though, is probably mostly the vinegar, and I love, love, love vinegar. Yes, I’m weird.

My father-in-law John weighs in with a recommendation on where to get it: “KFC has the best cole slaw anywhere. Chickens die for it.”

Yes? No? Are there other chain restaurants that do it well?

I guess I’ve never made my Hill Country cole slaw for you guys? It’s a recipe from our Texas relatives and it doesn’t have any mayo or vinegar (sorry) in it. In fact, it has Ranch dressing, blue cheese as well as some other odd characters such as scallions, cilantro and corn in it. Very nice change of pace from regular tangy cole slaw, which I love, too. Especially on pulled pork BBQ.

I’m not much for store made or restaurant cole slaw. I make my own with a Dole packaged mix. Add my own light mayo, skim milk, white vinegar and splenda. Toss in a sprinkle of celery seeds and let it sit for a few hours. It’s not too runny or heavy. The hubby loves when I make broccoli slow. Same concept just shredded broccoli.

I hate mayo.. but I absolutely LOVE coleslaw. I just grab the Dole shredded cabbage bag from the supermarket. The key I think to making it taste nothing like mayo… is to not only use less.. but use more sugar.. and to mix those two ingredients FIRST. Then you add the milk and vinegar.. you really have to taste as you go.. and I prefer my coleslaw sweet. I’ve heard of using a mix of sour cream and mayo together too.. so its a lighter taste as well.
