And now for something completely ‘differnt’

Oh, it’s time for a good Yorkism!

Today’s isn’t exactly a separate word. It’s just a, well, different pronunciation of the word “different.” And this is one I’ve been heard to use myself.

Instead of saying it as written, diff-er-ent, I tend to say diff-ern-t. Interestingly, a search for differnt on Google, the misspelled version, turned up 3,090,000 results. So it sounds like other people are pronouncing it that way too, and spelling it like they think it sounds!

So what do you think? Do you say different “differnt”ly?

About Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Oh, this is one of my favourite Yorkisms! Hee hee! Mom, Grandma, everyone on my York County side of the family pronounces this word as ‘differnt!’ I even catch myself doing it when I’ve been up there visiting for a few days!
