About this blog
My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Not quite as far of a throwback: Groceries in 1996
Today’s fun ephemera was also a gift from my husband; it’s a pair of Sunday grocery-store circulars from January 1996. Normally, we look at what I consider “older” old stuff – 30, 40, 50 years or more. So, in this … Continue reading

Spotlight on Hanover memories, Part 1: A great starter list of businesses
Ever since I last wrote about memories from the Hanover area, I’ve been receiving other thoughts from readers about stores of the past from that town. So, this week, I’m going to feature three posts – today, Friday and Saturday … Continue reading
Ask Joan: 2011 back-to-school edition
Today was my daughter’s first day of sixth grade – the start of middle school in our district! In addition to that typical craziness, we also went and bought her a (used) flute tonight so she can join the band. … Continue reading

Mail call: Memories of the Dallastown area from the 1920s to present
Today’s reader letter comes from Wade Kehr of York Township, who was kind enough to share his memories of the Dallastown area and his compliments to all those who have previously shared memories from around the county. He writes, “What … Continue reading
A blast from the past: Flinchbaugh Wagon Unloaders ad
One great thing about having a husband who is a noted ephemera blogger with a huge collection of stuff that he’ll never have time to blog? Well, of course it’s that he gives me anything York-centric that he comes upon, … Continue reading

Oh, strubbly: The fun continues
You thought you’d heard the last about being “strubbly,” or ill-kempt/disheveled, didn’t you? Then came a letter in the mail from Lorraine of York about her experiences with the word; and THEN, I got the most recent copy of the … Continue reading
Skillet cornbread and homemade strawberry jam: In which Joan actually cooks something
When I shared some cornmeal mush and corn pone recipes earlier this year, I got motivated to pick up some yellow cornmeal while grocery-shopping. Unfortunately, for some time after that, I wasn’t motivated to, you know, cook it into anything. … Continue reading
Business memories from perhaps an unusual source: A cookbook
I received in the mail a while back a photocopy of the 1947 cookbook put out by Christ Lutheran Church of York, and my first thought was, “Wow, someone must be sending me a scrapple recipe.” It turns out, though, … Continue reading

Ask Joan: Welcome back edition
As of Saturday, I officially earned my tae kwon do purple belt. We’re finished my daughter’s back-to-school shopping, and I’ve got new sneakers of my own. Life is good. What’s inside 1. Seeking location of “Toad Road” 2. York County … Continue reading
