What’s inside
1. How to get it published
2. Name of a former restaurant
3. Wolfgang’s Sporting Goods – where, when?
1. How do I put an article in (the newspaper)?
- Pastor Phyllis Hunter
I was very happy to hear Phyllis’ question, because it’s probably the No. 1 question I receive in an average workweek. And I’m even more happy to tell you what I told Phyllis, which is that it’s as easy as emailing news@ydr.com with the relevant details.
That said, there is a LOT more to sharing your news that we can help with; among other things, we’re so much more than a newspaper and there are so many ways we can help you spread the word beyond that one medium. So if you, like Phyllis, have the same question, I’d love to have you come to our “How to Get it Published” seminar, here at the YDR offices in West Manchester Township, on Nov. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. We go over everything you need to know to get the word out.
If you’re interested, TODAY is the deadline to register; you can do so at www.ydr.com/share. We’d love to see you there!
2. (I want to know) the name of the restaurant that was there before TGI Fridays was built. It was a smorgasboard beside what was then the Westgate Inn or now Best Western.
- Randy Robertson
Randy said this was for a trivia contest, and I was glad to be able to get back to him quickly, because this one one I actually knew! It was Family Time, and I used to go there a lot. (We’d talked about that in a post back in February.)
3. I just acquired an old fly rod on eBay with a sticker on it from Wolfgang’s Sporting Goods. Do you know when this store closed its doors by chance? Thanks. I live in Seattle but I grew up in Harrisburg.
- Dave Hoover
As near as I can tell, there was a Wolfgang’s in the Stonybrook area of Springettsbury Township at one point, but I do not have a date on when it was opened or closed, nor do I know if there were other locations.
Any ideas for Dave?
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, so it might take me a while, but I hope to be able to answer as many as possible!

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Hi Joan!
There was also a Wolfgang’s Shoes and Sporting Goods on N. George street, if I remember correctly it was near 9th Ave and (now) the old Central High School in North York.

Owned by my relatives, Millard H Wolfgang and sons, Wolfgang Shoes and Sporting Goods was indeed on North George St close to old Central High.
According to the Central HS yearbook of 1964. Wolfgang’s Shoes & Sporting Goods at 1121 N George St was “Selling Quality Footwear for 45 years”. In the 60′s my dad bought all his and my shoes there. I don’t think he bought many sporting goods there. He bought our fishing gear at J W Crone Grocery and Sporting Goods near the square in Dover.
Wolfgang’s Shoe and Sporting Goods was located at 1121 N. George St., York, PA. The front part of the building was used as a Shoe Store, while the rear was the Sporting Goods Store. They also ran United States Postal Substation #3 in York out of the building. One of the partners in the store was Millard “Bud’ Wolfgang who worked there until his retirement in 1978, which if I recall may have been about the time the store closed.
Hi Joan,
I could give you a complete history on Wolfgang’s Shoe & Sporting Goods but that would take 2 pages. Wolfgang’s began as a shoe store only in 1918 by my grandfather. The building was added onto in 1940 for the sporting goods department. The business was owned by Millard Wolfgang Sr., Millard Wolfgang Jr. (Bud) & Donald Wolfgang. Millard Sr. never fully retired & passed away in 1976. Millard Jr. (Bud) retired in 1978 & recently passed away. Donald became the sole owner in 1978 & the business continued with Don’s wife, Jane, daughter Beverly, son Dennis & son Donald operating the business until closing the shoe store in Dec. 1991. The store was at 1121 N. George st. for the entire 73 years of business. The sporting goods & name were sold to Dave Shindler in 1991, continuing operation at 1121 N. George St. for a short time befor moving to Stoneybrook Shoppette. Wolfgang’s did have a postal substation, lay-a-way & a “point system”. Wolfgang’s “traded” ice skates, sold American made footware & performed full services for the hunter & fisherman. Wolfgang’s was also the headquarters for North Hills Jr. High & Central High gym uniforms. (I am the 3rd generation of Wolfgang’s)
