Ask Joan: Thankfulness edition

Happy Thanksgiving week! I’m so blessed in so many ways. Please, take time today to be thankful as well. No matter how bad you think it is, there is something to be grateful for!

What’s inside
1. Info sought on Deppen’s pretzels
2. Hotel shaped like a ship
3. Ballet lessons from Mr. Pershing

1. What if anything was done with the Deppen’s Pretzel Factory located behind West Philadelphia Street and North Beaver Street? Did they tear down the Eyster-Weiser Foundry which was nearby? For a while in 1979 I was interested in buying the pretzel factory.
- George Bishop

Any ideas for George? I’ve done a search through the YDR’s archives and am not finding mention of the pretzel factory at all, as back as our searchable records go, so I’d love to know more!

2. I’m looking for the location of an old hotel/restaurant in the shape of a old ship where you can see 2 or 3 states from the peak of this establishment. I was there in the late 70’s or early 80’s! I do believe it was in or near York. Can you help?
- Debbie Porter

I have had Debbie’s question on file for a while – KNOWING that I had the answer but also knowing that I was missing something. It was my husband, Chris Otto, who finally put the pieces together for me on his blog, Papergreat.

Debbie’s question is answered here – complete with a postcard image of the Grand View Point Hotel in Bedford County, which, though not in or extremely close to York, is certainly an easy drive and almost definitely the place we’re seeking! Chris and I have visited its former site, actually, and a mural now commemorates the hotel, which burned down in 2001.

3. Back in the late 50’s to early 60’s I took ballet from Mr. Pershing at the Brownstone on East Market Street. We did a dance in costume in the York square for an event. Does anyone have any info on that? - Joyce Troxell

Since our memories of Dotti Roffe’s dance studio were so plentiful, I’m just hoping we can do the same regarding Mr. Pershing’s for Joyce! Please share any memories you might have.

Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, but I will feature three each week and answer as many as possible!

About Joan

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

I took ballet lessons from Mr. Pershing in the old Brownstone Building that was Blatner Studios near or beside the Martin Library. The lessons were given in the basement of the building. I don’t remember much but I do remember going there and Mr. Pershing.
