Dover/West York: June 2008 Archives

Daughter Sarah and I collected our third letterboxing stamp and read some facts about beetles today at Sunset Lane Park in West Manchester Township.

A nice walk around the park - which I found out has horseshoe pits, how cool is that?!

And, did you know there are more types of beetles than there are types of plant species total? Scary.

History fun in Dover

Lots of fun going on today and into the coming week up in Dover, courtesy of the Greater Dover Historical Society.

Many of you might know about the society's project at Dover borough's Alda Ketterman park, setting up a working replica blacksmith shop.

Well, the society holds an open house at the shop in Ketterman Park, Butter Road, Dover, from 10 to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of each month through October - including today. You can visit the reconstructed blacksmith shop and watch resident smithy Ted Ziegler forge hot steel on the anvil.

What else is the group up to?

Small world...

So, in my recent entry on picnic foods, I gave a shoutout to new commenter Joe for his guess about what was missing from my picnic.

In another recent entry, I mentioned that one of the posters on The Exchange was talking about Zimmie's pool.

Guess what? It was Joe! Small world, huh?

So, Joe, did you - or anyone else - hit the opening day of Graham Aquatic Center (the former Boys' Club or Farquhar Park pool)?

We were there - and even got some neat video footage! Check it out when you can.

Pool time

Mary Ann Fiery of Hanover sent in this photo of Oliver, a 6-month-old rat terrier, floating in the pool at her son's home, also in Hanover.

A reader on the Exchange is echoing this post I made last year about the former Zimmie's... I loved going when I was in school. That place was great!

Picnic food (part 2)

A gaggle of girls, including my daughter, got organized to play some game called "Annie, Annie Over" at the picnic. When it was over, I still didn't understand how to play, and one little girl had a ice pack on her head from where she bumped head-on into another girl.

OK, as promised, I do have photos of the yummy picnic food from Sunday, including hubby's rice and beans (see his comment on yesterday's post for the recipe) as well as local favorites like potato salad, baked macaroni and enough desserts for a thundering horde. As you're looking through, see if you can figure out what is missing from these pictures because they went faster than I could snap a photo! (Answer tomorrow!)

Church picnic time

I'll be at the annual picnic for my church today.

It's about that time of year... summer picnics, cookouts, all that good stuff. I went to a Memorial Day cookout at my best friend's house; that was a lot of fun.

It's funny, how much my life doesn't change. I just realized that my third-ever post on this blog was about picnics - two of which I just mentioned. The third picnic event last year at this time was the SPCA adopt-a-thon, and since I'm emphatically not in the market for any more pets, I think I'll give that one a miss... though I'd be remiss not to ask you to consider adopting something from one of our local animal shelters.

Anyway, here's to some good covered-dish eats - including one from our family, which my husband made - wow!

All right, my few but proud readers - any favorite picnic/cookout foods? I'm going to today's picnic prepared to take lots of pictures of the good eats, so I'll give you the rundown afterward.

In some "YDR trivia" news... that silhouetted guy in the photo above is the husband of biz editor Kara - we set him up for a recent photo illustration on a story about rising costs for cookout foods.
