Late to the snack party

Daily Record/Sunday News photo by Bil Bowden

I was out sick the last couple of days and am coming in late to the Snyder's/Utz deal hoopla.

But of course I can't let a snack food story go unnoticed on the blog! What do you guys think? Is the whole Snyder's-buys-Utz thing going to be good for York County snackers?

And, of course, what should the new company be called? Snutz? Mike Argento says Synutz. I was trying to come up with something that plays on "schnitz," which is, of course, an original York snack!

C'mon. Weigh in!

Hope you didn't change your plans for the Utz program at Guthrie Library - it's been postponed.

From their release:

The program on Utz Quality Foods to be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Guthrie Memorial Library - Hanover's Public Library has been postponed. Further information will be provided once a new date is scheduled and will be forwarded via press release.

I'll keep you posted once I hear more!

Weekend fun

| | Comments (1)

Sorry for the sparse posting this week - if you're a reader of our print edition, you've probably noticed it looks a little different, and I'm spending a little more time than usual working on it to make sure it looks as nice as can be.

But I wanted to take a minute and invite you all to some fun stuff going on this weekend, including some places my family expects to be out and about.

codorusblast.jpg

First up is Codorus Summer Blast at Codorus State Park outside Hanover. It started today and continues tomorrow and Sunday. We're planning to head out and spend the day at the park tomorrow (weather permitting), not only to check out the event but also to find the two letterboxes hidden at that park. Multi-tasking, yay!

(Interesting side note: You know where I found out about this event? On a placemat in McDonald's. Yep!)

Second event, courtesy of my friend Nina and delivered via text message this week, is a note about a quarter auction at the Springetts Fire Hall next to Home
Depot on Saturday, to benefit York's Habitat for Humanity. Doors open at 6 p.m., cost is $3 at the door.

Habitat, which is also holding a 5K run/walk tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m. on Allen Lane in Dover, is a great organization, and quarter auctions are a ton of fun, so I'd really encourage you to head out if you're free!

Support local theater!

As it turns out, many of my friends are involved in some local theater productions in the coming week or two.

My friend Adam Jones is one of the leads in "Lend Me A Tenor" at the Hanover Little Theater, 360 Blooming Grove Road. Shows are 8 p.m. May 7, 8, 9 and 14, 15, 16. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Readers' Cafe, 125 Broadway in Hanover, or by calling 630-2524

Adam is a professionally trained actor who's done tons of shows in New York City - and we're lucky enough to have him back in the area, so definitely go see him.

Another friend, Dan Stief, co-runs an arts group called OrangeMite Studios, which, among its other endeavors, stages theater performances at "The Barn" in Dover Township.

They've got a production of "As You Like It" coming May 15 and 16, with a Renaissance Fair-like set of events included.

Details from their poster below:

Both Adam and Dan went to Dover High with me, and they're both exceptionally talented - much more so than I am!

If you plan to attend either of these productions, let me know, because I'd like to go and would like someone to go WITH!

Does that post title give you any idea how I spent my day off this week?

On Wednesday, one of our days off together, Hubby and I decided to take a drive into Adams County. Not to do anything in particular; just because we almost never head west when we travel.

(Students tour the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg in this April 6 photo by James Robinson.)

I loved seeing rural Adams County! We looked at the monuments in Gettysburg a little bit, then wound our way around Biglerville, Orrtanna, Cashtown and some other towns.

I love small towns, and I especially loved getting to see the somewhat famous (and possibly haunted) Cashtown Inn.

But guess what? Couldn't go in. It was closed.

As was the somewhat well known Biglerville Country Store.

So was a neat little bookstore in Gettysburg that Hubby wanted to show me.

Oh, and the wonderful roadside fruit stands that dot the landscape in both Adams and York counties? Nope. No fruit on Wednesdays, it seems, at least not there.

Hubby is the one who suggested this post title. And while it fits, I would like to say that I had a good time seeing the sights in our neighboring county to the west. Definitely a good day trip.

buffalowingpieces.jpgThe folks at Snyder's of Hanover just received an interesting award for their Hot Buffalo Wing Pieces.

The snack has won a "Libby Award" from peta2, the world's largest youth animal rights organization. The zesty cayenne pepper-flavored pretzel pieces were voted Best Vegan Junk Food by visitors to peta2.com as part of the third annual Libby, or "liberation," Awards, which honor animal-friendly people and products.

The Hot Buffalo Wing Pieces are loaded with hot and spicy flavor but contain absolutely no chicken wings or other animal ingredients. The product beat out other popular vegan snack foods, including Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili Flavored Tortilla Chips, Fritos BBQ Flavored Corn Chips and Lance Toasty Crackers.

Snack all you want without hurting chickens. Sounds pretty good to me. I don't particularly care for the "buffalo wing" flavor, but I do love Snyder's of Hanover's "Honey Mustard and Onion Pieces." I could eat a whole bag of those.

I'm spending this week trying to clear out my e-mail (in a very Unclutterer style), and I found that a lot of the stuff sitting there was from news releases I wanted to blog about.

So, be warned: It might be a weird week on the blog! Today's should hit home, though - a new locally made treat.

utzeverything.jpgThis new treat from Utz Quality Foods of Hanover is part of the company's Select Pretzel line of artisan deli-style snacks.

Everything pretzels are like "everything" bagels - lots of different flavors. On a bright note, these happen to meet Utz's nutritional guidelines for the "Snacking Smart" line.

They're flavored with sesame seeds, onion, garlic and poppy seeds. (Which means I can't try them; I can't have either sesame or poppy seeds due to food allergies.) They do only have one gram of fat, with no trans fats, saturated fats or cholesterol. They will be available in 9 oz. bags beginning in mid-February.

Check out www.utzsnacks.com for more. And let me know if you see them at the store!
