Giving credit to local law enforcement

I got an e-mail recently from John Stine, chairman of York's Police Heritage Museum, letting me know about their web site, policeheritagemuseum.com.

John writes:

The Police Heritage Museum in downtown York, showcases over 200 years of law enforcement history. Although we are a small non-profit organization, we have for 13 years collected and preserved artifacts that relate to law enforcement in York County as well as agencies outside of York and Pennsylvania. Presently we have approximately 3400 square feet of displays, with many more artifacts to be displayed. We feel it is as important to preserve law enforcement history as it is any other facet of our heritage.

Check out their site if you get a chance. Being a police officer at any time is not an easy job, but when you think about how much harder it was in the days before cars, radio, the Internet... wow, my respect for those old-time officers is immense.

(Make sure you check out the Lockups virtual exhibit on the site. It taught me a lot about the former jail buildings I've seen around the county, like the one by the Dover Park, pictured above!)

Blues Traveler concert!!

Rose and I went to check out the Blues Traveler concert at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday night. I haven't even gone to bed yet, and it's 4 a.m., so you know it was awesomeness.

Check out the professional story with the professional photos here, then come back and read more of my blog to get my less-than-perfect but still fun take on the concert and some less-than-perfect but still great photos, too!

(First, though, here's photo proof that I made it to the show.)

A night at the Revs game

revs.jpg

In what appears to be a rarity this season, the Revs won during a recent game that I went to with my daughter and husband. It was Buck-A-Book night, which meant that my junior voracious reader got to go on the field before the game for some festivities and even collect some of the Revs' autographs.

I was just thrilled with our great seats (field box) and the fact that my daughter also won a $50 savings bond in the home run drawing (that's when this photo was taken.) Plus, I love that you can see the YDR logo in the photo. Yeah, I'm that dorky.

Any other Revs fans out there?

Fun in Thomasville

We spent a rare "family-togetherness morning" today, taking the hubby, daughter, Mom and I to Morningstar Marketplace in Thomasville, Jackson Township.

On a side note, while searching for Morningstar online, I found some great local photos on Flickr by Bruce Hengst Sr., including some of Morningstar.

Anyway, we had an interesting day... my favorite part is always the antiques market, where I love looking through old books and papers for York-type stuff. I came upon some invoices from the old P.A. & S. Small Co. for stuff like a case of prunes... saw a bus token good for one fare on the old York bus line (wonder if Rabbittransit would take it?) and found the sheet music for an "Ode to York." Not being independently wealthy, I left all that stuff there for another Yorker to take home.

I did drop a whopping buck-six on a couple of treasures, though.

Good news about the fair

Goats at the York Fair

Carnival Warehouse, a fair-industry Web site that compiles an annual listing of the top state fairs in North America, showed some good numbers for last fall's York Fair.

Our local event saw its attendance go up 13 percent in 2007 from the year before, with a total of 615,000 people visiting last fall.

Meanwhile, just south of the border, the Maryland State Fair was up 21 percent over 2006 with an attendance of 417,458, securing the No. 45 spot on the top-50 list. (York's fair was No. 32 on the same list.)

Also of note in our own state, the Allentown fair was up a huge 36 percent, with 2007 attendance of 585,000. It was 35th on the list.

The photo above is one I took at this year's fair for my mom, who loves goats. Here you go, Mom!

Support a fellow Yorkblogger

Wish we could all be this useful in the community!

Daily Record/Sunday News photographer Paul Kuehnel, who runs the Green Mesh blog, is going to be a moderator for a panel discussion on "Environmentalism in York" at 7 p.m. Thursday at Martin Library.

Paul will be joined in his moderation efforts by York College's E.C.O. The objective of the event, according to the library system, is "to experience information on environmental topics and empower people to become more in tune with their environment and seek solutions."

Get your Revs gear at market

YorkRev_012_200.jpeg
If you're like me, you don't plan ahead for Christmas gifts. (My Black Friday excursion being a rare exception.)

So if you wanted to get some York Revolution stuff for your favorite Revs fan, you might have thought you were out of luck, what with the season over.

But the Revs know about us Yorkers, so they've got a couple of places to get your favorite gear.

A free day at the museum

Photo from the York County Heritage Trust

It wasn't until about two years ago that I learned that the nicely kept building in the "island" where Route 74 meets West Market Street was the York County Fire Museum.

I might take some time this weekend to check it out, because I just got a news release from the York County Heritage Trust (which operates the museum) saying that, in honor of the Pennsylvania State Fire Convention being held this week in York, the museum will be open an extra day and will offer free admission.

If you go: The museum, at 757 W. Market St. (the corner of Carlisle Avenue) will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Though admission is free, donations will be accepted.

For details, call the Heritage Trust's education department at 846-6452. And let me know what you think, if you go!

Welcome to Springettsbury Township!

Next in a series of profiles originally publishes by the Daily Record in 2002, from Census 2000 information.

Welcome to Springettsbury Township, which, as of the 2000 Census, had the second-highest population in the county at 23,883, behind only the City of York, which had 40,862.

Up next will be Yorkana!

Is stubbornness a Yorkism?

So last week, for the Fourth of July, you might remember it poured, at least in many parts of the county.

Despite this, I stood in my driveway (about a mile from the Expo Center, uphill from it) and watched the fireworks. Further, I drug out my husband in his sock feet* so he wouldn't miss any. (He took off the socks before going out the door, wisely.)

* Now there's a Yorkism. Sock feet! Like butter bread - feet with socks, bread with butter?
