About this blog
My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Memories of Schwenk’s Newsstand from a former employee
I recently gave VERY brief mention to Schwenk’s Newsstand in this post about some old York County business matchbooks and ephemera that had been listed on eBay. In response, I received a wonderful letter from the Rev. Charles W. Keller … Continue reading
A piece of the so-called good old days, courtesy of Jo Ott
Quite some time ago, I received this fun missive from longtime reader Jo Ott. Jo was at the York County Heritage Trust last year, doing some research on a one-room school in the Dover area. She relates, “The Trust has … Continue reading

Ask Joan: Horseback riding follow-up edition
Sometimes, I can’t believe HOW many people in York County read Ask Joan. It’s nice, to be sure, but sometimes pretty surprising! Case in point: The number of responses I received about Heindel’s farm and the horseback riding there, in … Continue reading

Do you remember Crider’s in downtown York?
Some time ago, I received a note from Greg Leiphart saying, “As a child, I remember Crider’s (Creider’s?) store across from the courthouse on Market Street. I think it was a miscellaneous items store because they had a kids section … Continue reading
Get outside, York County!
Today’s weather was simply beautiful here, despite a VERY brief thunderstorm. I understand it was worse in some parts of the county, but we were very lucky. We headed outside in the late afternoon to the former Hawk Lake golf … Continue reading

More memories of York County butcher shops of the past
I had asked, back in December, for your memories of butcher shops in response to a letter from Wayne Breighner. This request drew some great recollections! Kathy Campbell-Beaverson says, “I remember Fisher’s Butchers that was located in the 300 block … Continue reading
Ask Joan: Beautiful day edition
Our neighborhood was BEAUTIFUL today! (Hence Ask Joan in the middle of the night – I was enjoying the weather all day!) What’s inside 1. Finding Twin Pines sweet bologna 2. Scott Stevens sporting-goods store 3. How Pinchtown got its … Continue reading
Memories of Playland roller-skating rink
Today’s post is very much thanks to the research of frequent commenter Audrey Lerew. She’d been digging in to info on York’s roller-skating rinks at the Heritage Trust library, and she sent me all the details, saying, “It would be … Continue reading
Ask Joan: Spring starts now edition
By the time many of you are reading this, it will be SPRING! We are so excited. I mentioned a few weeks ago that we are now a homeschooling family, and being able to be outdoors is a great blessing … Continue reading
More memories of the Flamingo restaurant
It’s been almost a full year since we talked about the Flamingo restaurant, which came up in this March 2011 post about a letter I’d received from Yvonne Leiphart. It was only a passing mention, but I received several memories … Continue reading
