About this blog
My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

More memories of York County butcher shops of the past
I had asked, back in December, for your memories of butcher shops in response to a letter from Wayne Breighner. This request drew some great recollections! Kathy Campbell-Beaverson says, “I remember Fisher’s Butchers that was located in the 300 block … Continue reading
Memories of Playland roller-skating rink
Today’s post is very much thanks to the research of frequent commenter Audrey Lerew. She’d been digging in to info on York’s roller-skating rinks at the Heritage Trust library, and she sent me all the details, saying, “It would be … Continue reading
More memories of the Flamingo restaurant
It’s been almost a full year since we talked about the Flamingo restaurant, which came up in this March 2011 post about a letter I’d received from Yvonne Leiphart. It was only a passing mention, but I received several memories … Continue reading
eBay becomes a source for local business memories
Many thanks to longtime reader Larry Good, who last week shared with me links to several eBay items for sale – matchbooks and other memorabilia depicting former York County businesses. I do occasionally watch some eBay auctions for York “stuff,” … Continue reading

A wonderful image of York’s Continental Square and its trolleys in the late 1930s
Today’s post is just a fun image shared by reader Francis Wark – who you might remember had shared memories of working at McCrory’s in a past post. This image depicts York’s Continental Square at Christmastime, circa 1938, complete with … Continue reading

More memories of Mack the Fire Horse
I wrote in depth about Old Mack the Fire Horse for the first time in this October post. Well, some time after that, an excerpt from that post ran in our print edition, and in response I received a letter … Continue reading

Ask Joan: Piano concert edition
A somewhat little-known fact about me: I played the piano for about 15 years – from the time I was 4 years old until part way through college. Then, having no piano, I just didn’t play at all for several … Continue reading

A quick update on butcher-shop memories
What does this photo have to do with butcher-shop memories? You’ll have to go here to find out! In all seriousness, I’ve gotten an incredible response to this earlier butcher-shop memories post, so expect more to come on this topic … Continue reading
A couple of quick memories about Peoples Drug
This July post got us started talking about memories of Peoples Drug. Included was this photo, originally seen on June Lloyd’s Universal York blog. It shows the store in September 1955, with its windows taped as protection against a coming … Continue reading
The one thing everyone remembers about Babe Keller’s restaurant
OK, this is just fun. We talked almost six months ago about memories of Babe Keller’s Restaurant, and as part of that, Wayne Breighner had some stories to tell about how that restaurant’s owners were real jokesters. And the fun … Continue reading
