Joan's randomness: March 2008 Archives

Headed east

Wow, I'm doing a lot of out-of-York-County traveling lately!

We're heading out of town for a few days because of an illness in the family, but I'll try to check in briefly from the greater Phila. area.

Maybe I should just start posting on Jen's travel blog instead of this one!

More in "Canada"

Well, I decided to head back "north" again Saturday... that's two weekends in a row; will I lose my "Official York Countian" certificate for this?

Anyway, my mom and I decided to take advantage of a quiet weekend to head up to the new Hollywood Casino at Penn National, near Grantville.

Just as we crossed the river, it started to snow, so we were a little concerned, but all it did was create a goodly fog for the last 20 minutes of our drive, no accumulation (yay!)

But now, the good stuff - the gambling...

Yes, I've falling into the scary realm of internet quizzes, but only because I was trying to explain to Sue, who is organizing the new-comic trial in the paper, that Dilbert is for dweebs, not geeks. xkcd is for geeks.

I am "69 percent Nerd, 78 percent Geek, 52 percent Dork."

Those who know me will say there was never any doubt!

Take the test

Got this e-mail today through our "contact us" link online:

Dear Editor, Hello! My name is Anthony Abinanti and I am a fourth grade student at Evansville Day School. I am doing a 20 page report on Pennsylvania. I would be very pleased if you could send me some souvenirs, postcards, or any thing that relates to Pennsylvania and also publish this in your newspaper. This will help me a lot! Please send to Anthony Abinanti at Evansville Day school 3400 N. Green River Rd Evansville IN 47715. Thank You very much, Anthony Abinanti

What do you think? Am I getting spammed by a fourth-grader, or should I legitimately drop a copy of the paper in the mail for the kid?

My Canada

There is a joke around the office that I'm so York-centric that the greater Harrisburg area is like "my Canada."

I admit a slight degree of directional-challenged-ness on my part might have added to that perception, so I can't take offense.

Anyway, I ventured into the Great North Woods last night. What was the occasion, you ask?

Fun in Thomasville

We spent a rare "family-togetherness morning" today, taking the hubby, daughter, Mom and I to Morningstar Marketplace in Thomasville, Jackson Township.

On a side note, while searching for Morningstar online, I found some great local photos on Flickr by Bruce Hengst Sr., including some of Morningstar.

Anyway, we had an interesting day... my favorite part is always the antiques market, where I love looking through old books and papers for York-type stuff. I came upon some invoices from the old P.A. & S. Small Co. for stuff like a case of prunes... saw a bus token good for one fare on the old York bus line (wonder if Rabbittransit would take it?) and found the sheet music for an "Ode to York." Not being independently wealthy, I left all that stuff there for another Yorker to take home.

I did drop a whopping buck-six on a couple of treasures, though.
