Joan's randomness: May 2008 Archives

... but I saw the new Indiana Jones movie while on vacation at the Delaware shore this week.

First of all, it was good. Shia LeBouf was a surprisingly fun addition to my "old favorites."

Second of all, Harrison Ford is still hot! He's my new desktop wallpaper (see below).

That is all.

It's my half-birthday!

I'm feeling random today. But I just realized that today is my half-birthday... I'm 25.5 years old exactly.

Scary. When do I start being a "grown-up?"

Frugal Yorkers

| | Comments (2)
Been meaning to post about this for a while, since anyone who appreciates life in York County appreciates the local cheapness ... err... frugality?

We started a new "Saving Money" section on the newspaper Web site that I'm pretty proud of. I know the economic conditions are pretty much the top issue on people's minds, so I'm glad that I could combine some of the resources we have, whether from stories that have run in the paper or tips submitted by readers. There's even a calculator that shows you how much you commute costs you per trip and per year... yikes... I'm SO GLAD I live half a mile from the office!

Anyway, check out the new section here. And post a comment to let me know what else you'd like to see us offer online, either on this topic or others. I really do want to spend my days making things that are useful...

Yummy - cracker candy

| | Comments (1)

Courtesy of intrepid reader Jo, I recently went on a quest to find out more about "cracker candy."

This led me to another intrepid woman in my life, my mother, who normally can turn up any recipe but who wasn't familiar with this treat. So, moving along the list, I hit up correspondent and friend Barb Krebs, who provided an AWESOME recipe for me.

Work is ... YDR?

A few weeks ago, we went to the spring "Curriculum Fair" at my daughter's school. Among other things, we got to see their group poster projects on "Our Community." They learned that a community is a place where you live, work, play and go to school.

So, poor Sarah... both her parents work at the good ol' YDR. So what else would she choose to illustrate a workplace than the newspaper? Most of the other kids had malls, doctor's offices, you know, that sort of thing. Hers had the newspaper! If you look really close, you can see that the top right section has little letters that spell out "York Daily Record" on it. And, it really does look a good deal like our office. How cool is that?

A night at the Revs game

In what appears to be a rarity this season, the Revs won during a recent game that I went to with my daughter and husband. It was Buck-A-Book night, which meant that my junior voracious reader got to go on the field before the game for some festivities and even collect some of the Revs' autographs.

I was just thrilled with our great seats (field box) and the fact that my daughter also won a $50 savings bond in the home run drawing (that's when this photo was taken.) Plus, I love that you can see the YDR logo in the photo. Yeah, I'm that dorky.

Any other Revs fans out there?

A day at Pinchot

In honor of our third wedding anniversary this past Wednesday (yay!), my husband and I will be taking a short trip to the Delaware shore next week.

But, on anniversary day, I was working at my part-time job and he had to work in the late evening here at the paper, so we contented ourselves with a smaller excursion - a picnic lunch a la Subway and a hike around the lake at Pinchot Park.

It was a bit cold - and we got rained on a bit during the last third of our two-mile-or-so walk - but I did get one neat picture on my cameraphone... of a tree, carved up like crazy, with lots of other couples' initials. I'm a little too tree-friendly to have added to it, but I did think a photo was an appropriate anniversary commemorative!

(If you like this, you should check out our Carving Tree project that assistant features editor Sue Haller did a couple of years ago. It's an even more detailed look at one tree's graffiti.)

Well, first of all, I can't say thanks enough to those who came out for the alumni band concert Sunday at Dover High.

And special thanks to my very own professional photographer, Jo, for taking pictures of me!!

(I'm the one with the pink hair... under the tuba!)

I can't say enough about what fun it was to play the sax again. I'm considering taking some lessons from a friend of mine, who also played in the alumni concert (unlike me, he kept up with it and, in fact, teaches professionally.) I'm also considering joining the Columbia VFW Band, also directed by George Bradshaw (who you can see the back of above.)

I know there are lots of community bands around, but other than that, I'm not sure where else I would find to play. I'm certainly not good enough to play with, say, a club band.

At any rate, it was an amazing time and I'm really glad for Jo's photos so I have something to remember it by!

It's official...

This morning was the first time it cost me more than $50 to fill up the ol' 2003 Taurus.

Check out Drive for a roundup of gas prices around the county... and my friends on the biz blog for more gas price observances...

Temporary brightness

I got my hair dyed today. It didn't come out as planned, and though I love it, I'm not keeping the new look.

Want to see it?
