Joan's randomness: June 2008 Archives

For comic lovers

If you like the funny pages, I think you'll appreciate this.

One day, Dan Walsh of Dublin asked himself what would happen if you took Garfield out of "Garfield." The answer was Garfield Minus Garfield, a site that even strip creator Jim Davis thinks is funny.

Walsh's site says:

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let's laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

Who indeed?

(PS: If you really like comics online, my favorite is xkcd.)

New babies!

| | Comments (0)

It turns out that two of my friends from back in school had babies in the last two weeks.

So, here is a public CONGRATS to Brandy on his new baby girl and another CONGRATS to Laura on her new baby boy!!

You will both make such great parents.

Puzzle queen

416P5A0T3QL._SL500_AA240_.jpegFor those who were following the day-to-day exploits of Joan... I finished my 300-puzzle sudoku book! (It's exactly the one pictured here. Only, mine looks a LOT more beat up now.)

Now, here's the thing. It actually kinda hurts to throw it out, because I put so much work into it! But, what on earth am I going to do with a finished puzzle book on my bookshelf?

Next project: I'm about halfway through a kakuro book. Unlike the sudoku book, which was all hard puzzles but all the same level throughout, the kakuro book gets harder as you go. So, I'm halfway through, but the second half will be a lot harder than the first.

I guess it's the math lover in me that draws me to these. I like almost all puzzles - crosswords being my least favorite, though. Any other puzzle addicts out there?

bruceRUCKAS0606_468x661.jpgOK, I'm not bitter at ALL that I've gotten more comments on the topic of "hot older guys" than I ever have on anything York County-related. Really. :P

But, who am I to knock such a popular subject?

Here, by popular vote, are the responses I got when I asked who besides Harrison Ford, George Clooney and Bruce Willis counted as a "hot older guy."

For my sister

039_18567~Pierce-Brosnan-Posters.jpegMy sister Carol finally made it to my blog - Hi, Carol!! She says I have to add Pierce Brosnan to my list of hot older guys - George Clooney, Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis being my top three.

I'm not the world's biggest Pierce fan, but he's pretty OK. Scarily, Johnny Depp is making his way up there to the category of "older" hot guy... guess I'll have to add him too. Who else am I missing?

My friend Jeff had this on his MySpace... I'm sure it's been around the internet for a while, but some of these were so funny I had to share!

You know you’re from Pennsylvania if:

You’ve never referred to Philadelphia as anything but "Philly." And New Jersey has always been "Jersey."

You refer to Pennsylvania as "PA" (pronounced Peeay). How many other states do that?

You know what "Punxsutawney Phil" is, and what it means if he sees his shadow.

The first day of buck and the first day of doe season are school holidays.

You can use the phrase "fire hall wedding reception" and not even bat an eye.

Happy Father's Day!

Well, first of all, happy day to all you dads out there!

It being father's day, I'm honoring Hubby's wish for a peaceful day at home. We might go check out the "York's Greatest Yard Sale" (I still have a hard time not calling it the "World's Greatest Yard Sale") but other than that, no big plans.

Today's festivities, though, and some recent blog comments got me wondering... how many names do Yorkers have for grandfathers - or any grandparents, really?

Blues Traveler concert!!

Rose and I went to check out the Blues Traveler concert at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday night. I haven't even gone to bed yet, and it's 4 a.m., so you know it was awesomeness.

Check out the professional story with the professional photos here, then come back and read more of my blog to get my less-than-perfect but still fun take on the concert and some less-than-perfect but still great photos, too!

(First, though, here's photo proof that I made it to the show.)

Small world...

| | Comments (1)

So, in my recent entry on picnic foods, I gave a shoutout to new commenter Joe for his guess about what was missing from my picnic.

In another recent entry, I mentioned that one of the posters on The Exchange was talking about Zimmie's pool.

Guess what? It was Joe! Small world, huh?

So, Joe, did you - or anyone else - hit the opening day of Graham Aquatic Center (the former Boys' Club or Farquhar Park pool)?

We were there - and even got some neat video footage! Check it out when you can.

Happy blog birthday to meeeee!!!! One year ago today, I made my first post, about the World's Greatest Yard Sale.

On that day, "Umbrella" by Rihanna was the number-one song. Here are the number-one songs for EVERY June 9 from 1891 to the present.

If you really want to know what happened on this day in history, check out our online history section.
