Another old ad

Remember my post on the old ad for Lydia A. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound?

Well, Hubby found me another York-related ad, not quite so old, but still neat.

This one's for a York window-unit air conditioner. It, like the Lydia E. Pinkham ad, is from the Delaware area (the units are being sold at a store in Wilmington).

The magazine was "Delaware Today," published in 1970.

You, too, can be a proud owner of an air condition with an "ever-clean front," quiet operation and an environmentally friendly filter!

Just another piece of history. Enjoy!

A blast from the past

I love scrapbooks. In fact, I just went on a three-day scrapbooking retreat this past weekend, where I finished three Christmas albums and most of a 2008 album. Oh, and my high school album. (My 10-year reunion is this year. There's a little bit of a delay.)

Well, Hubby is into scrapbooking too, in his own way. I like fancy paper and family photos. Hubby, well, Hubby loves newspapers. A lot.

So what he does is cuts out old newspaper ads and pastes them into blank books. He gets super-old newspapers at used book sales, and from his mom's house in Delaware County.

Now me, I like newspapers, but really only like local news. So I was super-happy when he flagged this ad for me recently. It's from the State Register in Laurel, Del., from Oct. 4, 1919. (Price of that edition of the newspaper? 3 cents a copy!)

It's an ad for Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, and one of the testimonials is a woman from Hellam!

The medicine was for "female troubles," and the Hellam woman, Mrs. E.R. Crumling, was happy with how it relieved those symptoms. The thing is,she said she wasn't able to do any work before, and now she's thrilled because she can keep up with all her housework. Um, wait. I wouldn't want a medicine that made me MORE able to do housework! (Just kidding.)

New commenter Craig checked in with me recently on my post about the pizza shop that used to be where Moonlight Cafe is now, in Dover.

pizzasteak.jpgThe shop was Salvo's Pizza, and Craig provided me some new info I didn't have before - he says the Moonlight's owners are relatives of the folks who owned Salvo's - whose original owner has since passed away.

Craig reminded me of something super-good about Salvo's... they had a fabulous pizza steak sandwich.

He describes it: "The bread that he used for the steak sandwiched was actually like a pizza crust folded in half, baked, sliced and filled. I loved those sandwiches! I haven't found another place that makes them like that since."

Anyone know a place to get a pizza steak like that? I'd forgotten about these, but reading Craig's comment brought back some really delicious memories!
