One-room schools

| | Comments (0)

Curt Goodling of Dover provided this photo, taken March 10, 1952, of Hoover School in Dover Township, then under the direction of teacher Harvey Linebaugh. Readers across the county were glad to share their memories of one-room schools in the area.

Last Friday, we ran a story on the former Pleasant Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse in Adams County affectionately known as "Mud College."

We've had an ongoing series in the Weekly Record sharing readers' memories of one-room schools. That series, and other stories on these local landmarks, are available at ydr.com/schoolhouses.

And I'm still collecting one-room schoolhouse photos and memories. Post a comment and I'll get in touch with you to share your stories!

Over the Hills to Pathmark

More on "What it used to be" in York County...

Before the new Delco Marketplace along Route 74 in West Manchester Township, it was the "Delco Centre," and before that, just plain "Delco Plaza."

I love the new Lowe's and especially the Chili's and Grand Buffet in the newest incarnation, but I miss some of the old favorites from the original shops as well - most notably, Hills and Pathmark.

So I had been wanting to post about my contention that we used to have a Ponderosa in York County. Except I couldn't remember where.

Totally unrelated, enter this discussion on The Exchange, and now I know that Ponderosa used to be next to where Wonderful Garden is, off of South Queen Street.

Have you all noticed that my "Used to be" posts all seem to deal with food? And shopping? I'm scared about how that reflects on me.

Mmm, square pizza

Jenn Ratcliffe, an employee at Boardwalks in Springettsbury Township, carries homemade pizza to the dinner crowd in March.
Over at The Exchange, we've been talking about Boardwalks, out on East Market Street in the shopping center with Food Lion.

I ended up pulling out an "It used to be..." on the Exchangers, because we started talking about where Boardwalks used to be (the shopping center closer to town on East Market, where the Red Lobster and Lowe's are), as well as what Boardwalks used to be (part of the Ledo Pizza franchise.)
