Finish reading 'Pool time' »Last Friday, we ran a story on the former Pleasant Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse in Adams County affectionately known as "Mud College."
We've had an ongoing series in the Weekly Record sharing readers' memories of one-room schools. That series, and other stories on these local landmarks, are available at ydr.com/schoolhouses.
And I'm still collecting one-room schoolhouse photos and memories. Post a comment and I'll get in touch with you to share your stories!
More on "What it used to be" in York County...
Before the new Delco Marketplace along Route 74 in West Manchester Township, it was the "Delco Centre," and before that, just plain "Delco Plaza."
I love the new Lowe's and especially the Chili's and Grand Buffet in the newest incarnation, but I miss some of the old favorites from the original shops as well - most notably, Hills and Pathmark.
Finish reading 'Over the Hills to Pathmark' »So I had been wanting to post about my contention that we used to have a Ponderosa in York County. Except I couldn't remember where.
Totally unrelated, enter this discussion on The Exchange, and now I know that Ponderosa used to be next to where Wonderful Garden is, off of South Queen Street.
Have you all noticed that my "Used to be" posts all seem to deal with food? And shopping? I'm scared about how that reflects on me.
I ended up pulling out an "It used to be..." on the Exchangers, because we started talking about where Boardwalks used to be (the shopping center closer to town on East Market, where the Red Lobster and Lowe's are), as well as what Boardwalks used to be (part of the Ledo Pizza franchise.)

Although it was still primarily a strip mall, there used to be an indoor part where you went from one level to the other, and in there was the first Orange Julius stand I ever experienced.
Regular readers of this blog will soon learn that I could basically live on hot dogs. And the OJ hot dogs were amazing. (I could pretty much care less about 80 varieties of smoothies, sorry.)
Though it's not mentioned on the Dead Malls page, it definitely should be (and you should check out the other York County malls in that feature, some of which I'll write about in the future!)
Does anyone remember the "Best" department store that used to be where AAA is now on Eastern Boulevard?
Finish reading 'Buying the Best' »Does anyone remember a fast-food-type restaurant named Rax that used to be on Route 30 near George Street, I think where the McDonald's was before it moved across the street?
(Wow, how's that for a lot of used-to-bes in one sentence?)
Finish reading 'Rax, anyone?' »Does anyone remember when the Rutter's on Lightner Road in Manchester Township was a Rutter's Family Restaurant and not the convenience store?
Our family used to eat there a lot of Sundays after church. I remember it being a real cozy place with great food.
I know they briefly had a restaurant out by the Galleria, too, but I think the Lightner Road one was the longer-lasting and, I think, the original.
Know any other York County "used-to-bes"? Post comments!
I'm sure you're familiar with the York County habit of calling places by "what they used to be," often with no regard for the fact that it hasn't been that in decades.
Like the Yorkisms, I'm going to try to collect these, and I'm open to suggestions, so post comments below!
My favorite is Zimmie's (Zimmy's? I'm not even sure how you spell it.) That's what the Green Valley swim club on Poplars Road in West Manchester Township used to be. As far as I can tell, it's been Green Valley at least since I was in elementary school, possibly longer. But I call it Zimmie's. My friends all call it Zimmie's. Because that's what our parents called it. My daughter, who took swimming lessons there last summer, even called it that.
Indoctrinating a third generation. I love it.
