I didn't realize this was local...

So when my brother came out from Tucson, he noticed how green it is in Pennsylvania. That I knew would be very different than where he came from.

But he also noticed something else that I've recently come to find out is a "northeastern U.S." thing, and which is very big in York County.

It's the idea of putting those little electric candles in the front windows of your house.

I guess I thought everyone did that, but my out-of-region family members assure me that it's much more popular around here.

Who knew? For my part, I'd love to have them, but I'm too lazy to go around and turn them on every night. Someone suggested timers, but I'm pretty sure I'm too lazy to even set them all up on timers. Isn't that sad?

Who would York Countians vote for?

MarvinMartian.gif
If I decided to write in a cartoon character during any election, it'd definitely be Marvin the Martian.
Yet another "Only in York County" from one of our staff members' Sunday columns... you'll remember that last week, I directed you to read about business editor Cathy's possum.

Well, this week, if you want a good laugh, read "Voters send all kinds of messages with write-ins" by our political reporter, Tom Joyce.

Not terribly surprised that we'd write in Foghorn Leghorn, Mickey Mouse and more. I just wish Tom would've passed the list around the newsroom so we could see the truly inappropriate ones!

A real 'only in York County'

I haven't had a good "Only in York County" for a while now, and thankfully, providence has provided in the form of one of my friend and fellow editor Cathy's ridiculous dogs, Scully.

Guess what kind of wildlife Scully dragged in?

Take a chance on some meat?

No, it's not going to give you E. coli. In fact, it's some of the best meat I've had - from Godfrey Bros. Meats of the Seven Valleys area.

So how do you get this wonderful meat?

Head to the Stewartstown Lions Club and Eureka Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company's fourth annual meat bingo Friday at the fire hall, North Main Street in Stewartstown.

A different kind of honor

This news release was a good way to end my day Tuesday:

State Rep. Ron Miller (R-Jacobus) has been named "Legislator of the Year" by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. The award was given to him at the association's recent convention in Hershey.

"It is an honor to be chosen by the PSACF," said Miller. "I am a supporter of Pennsylvania's county fairs, as I believe they are part of our fabric and a big reason why this state is a great place to live."

The York encyclopedia

wiki.jpg

We have recently launched York Wiki, an online encyclopedia for all things York County.

What's a wiki? To quote Wikipedia, it's "a medium which can be edited by anyone with access to it, and provides an easy method for linking from one page to another. Wikis are typically collaborative websites."

York Wiki is fledgling site. There's not much content at all there right now. That's where you come in. Post a YorkWiki page for your business, your club or organization, your school, yourself or even your favorite local hangout. Link to your own site and to other people's wikis to share even more information. It's free, and anyone can make an update.

Yikes...

So, as I was reading through the Web updates we've posted on ydr.com this week, I realized something: I know this guy!

Turns out the man robbed while delivering pizzas was a friend of mine from high school. I had been wondering how he was doing.

Chad, if you happen to read this, hope you are doing OK! Post a comment and say hi!

Working out is hazardous!

If you're going to jump up and down on the step-aerobics step at the gym, make sure the step is securely placed on a nonskid surface.

Or else, like me, you might sprain your wrist, catching yourself as you fall.

The best part was, in true York County fashion, at least two people I knew were in the workout room with me, and the nice woman at the desk (who fetched me an ice pack) was an acquaintance I know through my part-time job.

So, bear with any typos on the blog for the next couple days - I'm sporting a nice, hefty wrist brace! And go give extra props to Michele, who has not yet ruined any appendages at the gym!

York County friends

A great friend skims the newspaper ads for you when he knows you're looking for a new lawnmower.

A great York County friend drives by a yard sale on his way home from work, sees one for sale, test-drives it, tries to negotiate the price down, calls you, gives you directions, asks the lady selling it if you can stop by later after her sale is closed, and, after you've stopped by to see for yourself and pay for it, comes back in his Dodge pickup to load it up and deliver it to your house across town!

And, on the less positive side...

From Mike Argento: A different kind of "Only in York County"

I don't know... maybe as a lifelong Yorker, I've gotten numb to it, but doesn't that sort of stuff happen everywhere?

Well, except for the samurai swords part. And maybe the pit bull. And... never mind.
