About this blog
My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

Ask Joan: Horseback riding follow-up edition
Sometimes, I can’t believe HOW many people in York County read Ask Joan. It’s nice, to be sure, but sometimes pretty surprising! Case in point: The number of responses I received about Heindel’s farm and the horseback riding there, in … Continue reading

Do you remember Crider’s in downtown York?
Some time ago, I received a note from Greg Leiphart saying, “As a child, I remember Crider’s (Creider’s?) store across from the courthouse on Market Street. I think it was a miscellaneous items store because they had a kids section … Continue reading
Memories of Playland roller-skating rink
Today’s post is very much thanks to the research of frequent commenter Audrey Lerew. She’d been digging in to info on York’s roller-skating rinks at the Heritage Trust library, and she sent me all the details, saying, “It would be … Continue reading
Ask Joan: Spring starts now edition
By the time many of you are reading this, it will be SPRING! We are so excited. I mentioned a few weeks ago that we are now a homeschooling family, and being able to be outdoors is a great blessing … Continue reading
More memories of the Flamingo restaurant
It’s been almost a full year since we talked about the Flamingo restaurant, which came up in this March 2011 post about a letter I’d received from Yvonne Leiphart. It was only a passing mention, but I received several memories … Continue reading
Ask Joan: Post Card Club edition
Late writing Ask Joan tonight, because Chris and I were out visiting the York Post Card Club at their monthly meeting. What a fun group – many of the folks read my columns in the paper, and I’m hopeful some … Continue reading
Ask Joan: Homeschooling edition
Big things for the Concilio/Otto clan last week on Leap Day – we filed our paperwork to officially become a homeschooling family. Sarah turns 12 this month and will finish out the sixth grade with a ton of fun things … Continue reading
eBay becomes a source for local business memories
Many thanks to longtime reader Larry Good, who last week shared with me links to several eBay items for sale – matchbooks and other memorabilia depicting former York County businesses. I do occasionally watch some eBay auctions for York “stuff,” … Continue reading

Ask Joan: Special shout-outs edition
Today’s Ask Joan on the blog and yesterday’s Ask Joan in our print edition have a “dedication” component. I’d love to give a special hello to Jim Goodling and Yvonne Altland, two loyal readers, fans and friends who are fighting … Continue reading
A wonderful image of York’s Continental Square and its trolleys in the late 1930s
Today’s post is just a fun image shared by reader Francis Wark – who you might remember had shared memories of working at McCrory’s in a past post. This image depicts York’s Continental Square at Christmastime, circa 1938, complete with … Continue reading
