Sold! on a good time

Tom Klinedinst of Manchester Township auctions off a toy truck held for display by Butch Landis at Mt. Royal Auction in Dover Township in 2007.

I recently received a news item from freelance writer and friend Barb Krebs about an event coming up next week in southern York County. We'll be running this in Tuesday's Weekly Record edition, but since the event takes place that day, I wanted to get the word out sooner!

Barb writes:

Wehrly’s Auction, on Snyder Road in Codorus Township, near Glen Rock, will hold the fifth annual auction for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.

Local bakers will donate cakes and other homemade items that will be auctioned to benefit the Memphis, Tenn.,-based hospital and its work with children who have cancer.

Since the tradition began in 2004, the auction has raised more than $18,000 for St. Jude, auctioneer Scott Wehrly said.

More in "Canada"

Well, I decided to head back "north" again Saturday... that's two weekends in a row; will I lose my "Official York Countian" certificate for this?

Anyway, my mom and I decided to take advantage of a quiet weekend to head up to the new Hollywood Casino at Penn National, near Grantville.

Just as we crossed the river, it started to snow, so we were a little concerned, but all it did was create a goodly fog for the last 20 minutes of our drive, no accumulation (yay!)

But now, the good stuff - the gambling...

Date correction

Turns out my gun bingo post from a few days ago had an incorrect date - my apologies!

The event will take place Saturday, March 29 - for full details, see the earlier post, which has been updated with the correct info.

Mmm, free food

What was Thursday?

The first day of spring, sure. Also Maundy Thursday.

But, even better, free Rita's day.

Fellow Weekly/Web friend Marie Elena and I headed out to the Rita's at Manchester Crossroads for our free ice goodness. How did it go?

The York County Food Bank is having a food drive as part of Sunday's 23rd annual Spring Craft Show, organized by WSBA and held at Memorial Hall East and West at the York Expo Center.

The show is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; food dropoff will take place in the Memorial Hall entrance. The food bank will be collecting non-perishable food items, paper products, store gift cards and monetary donations, checks make payable to the York County Food Bank. All donations benefit York County residents.

Want to learn more about the food bank? Call Deb at 846-6435, ext. 101. And read more on the craft show at WARM 103's site.

Remember meat bingo?

Well, especially to my loyal readers Bear and Burkey, this one might be even better - sportsman's bingo, with prizes of guns, decoy packages and more.

Upcoming on the river

Historic Wrightsville is holding its 33rd annual Olde Towne Night at 7 p.m. April 5 at the Locust Street Methodist Church, 314 Locust St. in Wrightsville.

The group invites you to bring a covered-dish dessert, but publicist and virtual friend of mine Bob Schmidt assures me you should still come "even if you’re unable to bring a dessert." The desserts will be enjoyed during the program by speaker Rob Evans, a local artist and son of Historic Wrightsville life members June and Warren Evans.

He has a studio upstairs in the John Wright Factory Store and will be presenting a PowerPoint on “Visions of the Susquehanna” featuring artwork along the river. The show will look at artists who have painted the Susquehanna River through history, including a painting by Benjamin West on the river in Wrightsville made in 1767.

I know it's a little early to start thinking about April events, but with Easter coming up, I wanted to make sure I got the word out now!

Even more local ghosties

If you're intrigued by Y.A.P.S., another upcoming event will certainly draw your interest - a presentation on York County's haunted places and ghost stories later this month, courtesy of the Red Lion Area Historical Society.
