A tale of two lunches

| | Comments (6)

So Hubby and I had to go to Weis today to mail a package... and while there, we decided to pick up lunch.

Motivated by my awesome workout and fitness talk with a trainer last night, I opted for this:

It's a little hard to see, but it's a salad with chicken breast, olives, green and red peppers, radishes, and just a little bit of grated cheese and bacon. Dressing is canola/olive oil mix, and a little bit of vinegar. Yummy and healthy, right? (A little pricey, though, at $3.94.)

Well, Hubby decided that "thrifty" was going to be his lunch's buzzword. Here's what he got.

It's, supposedly, "heat and eat" meatloaf in sauce. You can't see it too well, but its color is not what I'd call the ideal color for meat. And the sauce looked like it had dried to the top of it. All that, though isn't as bad as my favorite part - the "special" label on top. He got clearance meat. Sale meat. Now, I know from my sister the grocery-store manager that there's nothing wrong with this... it's just getting close to its sell-by date, so the price is reduced. But I'm sorry, I just can't support "clearance meat" for lunch. The good news, though? It only cost $1.99.

Hubby, for what it's worth, said he would buy meat at yard sales if it saved him money. In fact, he said if he started a band, he'd call it "Yard Sale Meat."

Greeeeaaaaaat...

In fact, this post is entirely about a VERY YUMMY food that comes from Australia.

This is a package of TimTam. What are they? "Australia's favorite cookie." In fact, they're a "dessert biscuit" full of chocolately goodness. They come in original (chocolate creme) and caramel, and you can now get them at Target nationwide, courtesy of Pepperidge Farm.

I picked up this box at the West York target last Thursday after hearing tons of buzz about these online, and it was love at first bite.

Read more here, including a description of something I haven't yet tried but want to, a "Tim Tam Slam."

Anyone else had these?? If you haven't, better try them soon... Pepperidge Farm says they'll only be available until March 2009.

Just a quick hello

I've got some time off work today and tomorrow, so please excuse the brief postings. I'll definitely catch up Friday on the responses to my "sweet and salty" combos.

(The comments so far reminded me of my favorite, weird sweet and salty combo. It's Utz Sour Cream and Onion chips eaten with Diet Pepsi... at the very least, dipping the chips in the soda, but if no one's around, I just make sure they're both in my mouth at the same time by whatever means necessary.)

There's still time to cast your vote for your favorite combination; just post a comment!

I cooked again

In an effort to contribute something vaguely healthy to our Thanksgiving Day festivities, I made a Weight Watchers recipe for bacon and cheese mini-quiches.

Here they are:

quiches.jpg

I used my new Pampered Chef mini-muffin pan. Basically, you line the mini-muffin cups with wonton wrappers. Then you fill them with a tablespoon full of a mix of 1 cup of Egg Beaters, 1/2 cup of shredded fat-free cheese, a cup and a half of fat free evaporated condensed milk, minced onion and 4 strips of crumbled bacon.

It gets baked at about 350 for 15 to 20 minutes. Watch out; if you use too much filling, the edges of your wonton wrappers will burn before your inner egg mixture cooks.

They were really, really good! I'm turning into quite the chef. Now, I just need to make that shoo-fly pie I was talking about...

Another sweet and salty combo

Remember the reasoning behind dipping your french fries in a Wendy's Frostee - salty and sweet as a taste combo?

Well, Jo chimed in with another salty-sweet combo:

Chocolate ice cream or chocolate marshmallow sundae, with potato chips!

Now, Jo, I was trying to be nice and find you a picture of that somewhere out there on the internet, to use with this post.

However. Nowhere on the entire World Wide Web do I find a picture that comes close.

I think that makes you unique! :)

All right, I'm still taking submissions. What are your sweet and salty combos?
