One-room schools

| | Comments (0)

Curt Goodling of Dover provided this photo, taken March 10, 1952, of Hoover School in Dover Township, then under the direction of teacher Harvey Linebaugh. Readers across the county were glad to share their memories of one-room schools in the area.

Last Friday, we ran a story on the former Pleasant Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse in Adams County affectionately known as "Mud College."

We've had an ongoing series in the Weekly Record sharing readers' memories of one-room schools. That series, and other stories on these local landmarks, are available at ydr.com/schoolhouses.

And I'm still collecting one-room schoolhouse photos and memories. Post a comment and I'll get in touch with you to share your stories!

Like bluegrass?

If you're a bluegrass fan and looking for something to do this weekend, you might want to head south!

Scarecrow Farm, 2178 Orwig Road, Hopewell Township, is going to host a public bluegrass concert by the Harold Tipton Band from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Doors open at noon.

Rednecks unite!

If you like this blog at all, you've gotta check out The Redneck Rant, brought to you by Jonathan, a graphic designer at the Daily Record's sister paper in Hanover, the Evening Sun.

Now, I've never met Jonathan. If I did, I'd probably have to fight down the urge to call him Jon-boy. But from his blog, he sounds cool enough not to mind. At least, I hope he wouldn't, because he also seems somewhat larger than me and I sure wouldn't want to offend him.

So I had been wanting to post about my contention that we used to have a Ponderosa in York County. Except I couldn't remember where.

Totally unrelated, enter this discussion on The Exchange, and now I know that Ponderosa used to be next to where Wonderful Garden is, off of South Queen Street.

Have you all noticed that my "Used to be" posts all seem to deal with food? And shopping? I'm scared about how that reflects on me.

York County in the news

Since I'm the online editor for the paper, part of my job is to surf the 'net and see what's up.

In recent virtual travels, I found some neat references to York County in other media.
