York County online: June 2008 Archives

It's been a busy week here at the paper, especially online. In addition to our regular work, we've recently launched our "Green in York" section, our "Education today" section and made a lot of improvements to our history section, including creating new subsections on York's role in the Civil War and in the Revolutionary War.

Wow.

Oh, and spring sports all-stars start tomorrow... so that's what I'm working on right now. Check them out throughout the week; we'll be kicking off with boys' volleyball and proceeding through tennis, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field.

In my spare time at home, I've been trying to finish a 300-puzzle sudoku book that I started in 2005. I'm on 289... the end is in sight! Wish me luck - in both work and non-work endeavors!

One year ago today...

Happy blog birthday to meeeee!!!! One year ago today, I made my first post, about the World's Greatest Yard Sale.

On that day, "Umbrella" by Rihanna was the number-one song. Here are the number-one songs for EVERY June 9 from 1891 to the present.

If you really want to know what happened on this day in history, check out our online history section.

I've posted a lot before about York County's one-room schoolhouses, but how about a site that's a little more based in the present?

Check out our new Education today section, which made its debut earlier this week. One of my copy editors, Marie Elena, worked on it with Nickie Dobo, our education reporter.

I'm going to put Marie Elena on the spot and ask you to let her know what you. You can reach her at mciocci@ydr.com.

Don't be mean to her, though (not that you have a reason to - it's a good site). But she'll kill me!

I had written last week about our new "Saving Money" section.

One reader, Debra, left a comment that I thought was worth highlighting as a way to save money - she said she is not working right now, and with the rise in gas prices, her family needed to cut back on money spent.

One of her solutions: "I found recipes on the internet to make my own laundry soap, dish soap, shampoo, and conditioners. These recipes are suprisingly inexpensive to make, and they are green friendly." I thought this was a good tip, and it also ties in with yet another new YDR section, one on "green" living in York.

If you'd like some recipes for homemade cleaners, by the way, here's a good list.

Have any other tips to share to save money OR the earth? We're always collecting ideas. Post a comment!
