A 13-year-old dog had to be euthanized Thursday night after the animal was dragged behind a sport utility vehicle on Route 177 in Fairview Township in York County, PA, Pennsylvania State Police reported.
Trooper Brian Torkar was on patrol around 8:40 p.m. when he noticed a trail of what appeared to be hair and blood in the northbound lane, according to a news release. Just before reaching Yorktowne Road, he encountered a Chevrolet Suburban that was dragging a large dog tied to the bumper with a rope. The dog was still alive, police reported.
The driver of the Suburban told Torkar he owned the dog and hadn't realized it was tied to the truck.
The dog, a German shepherd-mix named Bandit, was taken to the animal emergency clinic in York, where it was euthanized. The animal had suffered severe trauma, Torkar reported.
State police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are investigating.
