FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS

York County SPCA will auction off jewelry, prizes — and men — to raise money for the organization.

An opportunity to have a date with Dave Segal will be sold to the highest bidder next month.

He’s easy to talk to, funny, cute and promises a good time if the price is right.

Segal, 29, is one of four bachelors who will be featured at the York County SPCA’s CN8 Channel 4 Annual Holiday Auction on Dec. 9.

Segal, who owns four dogs, said he has been an SPCA volunteer for more than six years. He welcomed the invitation to be auctioned at the organization’s annual fundraiser, he said.

“I’m a big animal lover, Segal said, adding that the auction is for a good cause.

“I figure . . . if it’s for the SPCA . . . if somebody’s actually going to bid on me for a dinner, I’m going to show them a really good time, Segal said. “I’m a big believer in ‘you get what you pay for.’

Segal, a West York resident, is president and co-founder of SpiderWeb Communications in Springettsbury Township. The company provides Web-based conferencing for situations challenged by logistics.

“We offer virtual communication services for small companies to Fortune 500 companies, federal government clients, medical institutions, he said.

In addition to having a passion for his work, Segal plays in professional pool competitions and enjoys dining out and playing cards.

He said he is uneasy when asked to talk about himself but won’t let a conversation become dull.

“I know how to have a good time, Segal said. “I’m not saying they’ll have milk shooting from their nose . . . but we’ll have a fun evening.

York County SPCA Executive Director Donna Ward agreed.

“He’s just great, she said. “If I were 10 years younger . . . I wouldn’t put him up for auction, I’d keep him for myself.

It was her idea to add dates with bachelors to this year’s auction.

“I have all these great-looking, single guy friends, Ward said. “They are . . . gorgeous, professional friends that I just think are great guys.

Ward said the auction will also include jewelry, pet accessories, trips, baskets and more. Hundreds of auction items will be available. Auction items are donated mostly by York County businesses, she said.

Bids may be placed online prior to the auction or by phone the day of the auction. All the auction’s proceeds, which were more than $30,000 last year, will benefit the York County SPCA, Ward said.

“There should be something that meets everybody’s needs, she said. “We have items that can fit anybody’s budget.
