What happens when you’re gone?

What would happen to your pets if you died or became incapacitated? Many people don’t have formal arrangements for their pets’ care, assuming they’ll outlive the pets or their friends and family will care for the pets. That’s why more than 500,000 pets are euthanized in shelters and veterinary offices each year after their owners die or become ill, according to Amy Shever, founder of 2nd Chance 4 Pets, a nonprofit organization in Los Gatos, Calif. Shever recently kicked off the Orphaned Pet Awareness campaign.

Through nationwide workshops, she hopes to educate animal welfare groups, veterinarians and pet owners about lifetime care planning options, such as establishing emergency plans and selecting caregivers. For details, visit www.2ndchance4pets.org.
