LOST: Brown & black tabby

| | Comments (0)

A female brown and black tabby with white paws and white bib was lost during a fire from East King Street in York, PA. She's 1½ years old, spayed, and her name is Biscuit.

The family got two of their cats out of the house, and two others scattered; the family has since found the third one, but Biscuit is still missing. If seen, call (717) 880-1079.

I rescued a human today

| | Comments (0)

by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.

I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

Ana needs room

| | Comments (0)

From Alex H.:
ana1126.jpgAs much as it pains me to do this, I have to. My recent move to a Hershey apartment just isn't fair to my dog, Ana. Ana is a 6-month-old purebred Alaskan Malamute. She is one of the most loving and helpful puppies I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Ana currently weighs about 80 pounds, and will continue to grow until she is about a year old -- which is why having her in an apartment all day just isn't working -- and with my hours here at the station and a second job I have, it's no longer fair for me to keep her in a crate or alone by herself all day.

I will tell you though, that Malamutes originated as working dogs and need to be played with, walked, or run around a yard in order to just stay happy. So you can understand that my coming home every evening seeing her lying in a cage with sadness in her eyes is what makes me say this is just unfair to her.

Malamutes are one of the top choices for families with children -- don't let her size scare you away. Under all her fur there is a heart of gold. I have had the joy of having her as my best friend since she was only weeks old and have never had a dog as loyal as Ana.

She has been around adults and children her entire life and loves nothing more than seeing new faces.

In the coming weeks, she will be spayed and have all of her shots updated, along with a general examination.

If anyone is truly interested, has a yard that she can run around in, and can devote the time to her that she deserves, e-mail AlexHeider@cbs21.com.

Sweet, deaf white pit mix needs help

| | Comments (0)

BARCS of Baltimore has a very sweet, approximately 1½-year-old, white female pit mix. Shelter workers believe her to be deaf, and would like to find a rescue group to pull her from the shelter.

She is very sweet, and while she gets herself excited she also seems to be able to control herself and not jump all over you. She LOVES attention, and seemed to love to be hugged and give kisses.

She came to BARCS as a stray.

IIf you can help this young girl, call Debra Rahl, Animal Programs Manager at BARCS, at (410) 396-4695.

Billy & Lilly

| | Comments (0)

billy-lilly1.jpgBilly the boxer has become the constant companion of a 12-day-old baby goat named Lilly. He sleeps with the goat, washes her and protects her from any dangers at Pennywell Farm Wildlife Centre at Buckfastleigh -- near Totnes, Devon, in England.

billy-lilly2.jpgBilly and Lilly have formed a close bond. The kid was abandoned by her mother when she was only a few hours old, and was adopted by paternal Billy when his owner, Elizabeth Tozer, began hand-raisng the goat.

billy-lilly3.jpgThe unusual bond has continued to develop, and the pair are now inseparable.

Elizabeth said: 'Lilly follows Billy around, which is really quite amusing to watch; and Billy sleeps with the goat and cleans her mouth after she feeds.'

Ball python available for adoption

| | Comments (1)

ballpython1122.jpgThis ball python came to Forgotten Friend Reptile Rescue from a good home. He is believed to be 12-15 years old, and has had a couple different owners.

He has a history of eating only live rodents, and the rescue hasn't tried feeding frozen/thawed rodents to him yet.

He is very easy to handle, and exhibits the typical docile nature of a ball python. He has good muscle tone and measures about 3 or 4 feet long. He appears to be very healthy in all aspects, and will make a great pet for several more years.

If you are interested in adopting this reptile, please apply online at www.forgottenfriend.org/apply.

Job description for cats

| | Comments (1)

A friend sent me this in an e-mail. My cats follow this description of a cats' duties pretty well -- especiall the "no closed doors" part.

BATHROOMS --Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.

DOORS - Do not allow any closed doors...in any room. To get the door opened, it's not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an outside door opened, stand half-way in & out & think about several things. This is particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquito season.

CHAIRS AND RUGS - If you have to throw up get to a white chair quickly. If you cannot manage in time, get to an Oriental rug. If there is no Oriental rug, shag is good. When throwing up on the carpet, make sure you back up while barfing so it's as long as a human's bare foot.

HAMPERING - If one of your humans is engaged in any activity, and the other is idle, stay with the busy one. This is called helping, otherwise known as hampering. Following are the rules for hampering: When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on and then picked up and comforted.

For book readers, get in close under the chin, between eyes and book--unless you can lie across the book itself. When human is working at computer, jump up on desk, walk across keyboard, bat at mouse pointer on screen, and then lay in human's lap across arms, hampering typing in progress.

WALKING - As often as possible, dart quickly & as close as possible in front of the human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark & when they first get up in the morning. This will help them practice their co-ordination skills.

BEDTIME - Always sleep on the human at night so he/she cannot move around.

LITTER BOX - When using the litter box, be sure to kick as much litter out of the box as possible. Humans love the feel of kitty litter between their toes.

HIDING - Every now and then, hide in a place where the humans cannot find you and do NOT come out for three to four hours under any circumstances. This will cause the humans to panic (which they love) thinking that you have run away or are lost. Once you do come out, the humans will cover you with love & kisses, and you probably will get a treat.

ONE LAST THOUGHT- Whenever possible, get close to a human, especially their face, then turn around and present your butt to them...humans love this, so do it often!

LOST: Orange tabby

| | Comments (0)

saber.jpgSaber, an approximately 10-month-old orange tabby, has been missing since Nov. 7 from Cypress Road South, Dover, PA.

His owners found him as a stray in June, and tried to make him an indoor cat, but he insisted on being an indoor/outdoor cat. He would roam the neighborhood, but didn't travel far. Neighbors saw him at 3 p.m. Nov. 7, but he didn't return to his owners' house by 5 p.m., as he usually did.

If seen, call (717) 292-6012.

Black beauty found in Littlestown

| | Comments (0)

littlestowncat.jpgIs this your cat? Or, would you like it to be?

This beautiful kitty showed up at a house in Littlestown on Halloween night. The cat is all black with just a few stray white hairs here and there, and is very sweet and well-behaved.

The finder is unsure if it's a male or female, but said it appears to be healthy, eats well, and has not been declawed.

Seems to have been an indoor cat, since it hasn't been fussing to go outside at all and it is very people friendly. It is an adult cat but seems to be pretty young. It is a good-sized cat, rather long and lean, with big paws.

littlestowncat2.jpgThe finder is hoping someone can take the cat in; they say it's a really great cat and deserves a better fate than being put down just because no one will adopt it.

For details, call Amy at (717) 359-9487.

Lovable Lacy seeks a home

| | Comments (0)

lacybeagle.jpgLacy has been participating in CPAA's HOPE (Hounds of Prison Education) Program since late August and loving every minute of it. But it's time for her to get the chance she deserves to live a happy life with a family of her own.

Lacy is a 9- year-old beagle mix and is just about as sweet as they come. Despite her sad and extremely difficult start to life, she still starts every day with hope and joy that spreads to everyone who has the pleasure of crossing paths with her.

Lacy never fails to offer a doggie kiss and a happily wagging tail to each inmate and staff member she passes during her daily routine. But, despite her outgoing personality and sweet demeanor, she has been living in rescue for years, overlooked time and time again.

In her time with the HOPE Program, Lacy has been an obedience star. She loves to learn, and has a ball at her weekly training classes.

Her handler is an "old dog" himself, and the two of them take great pride in their ability to teach each other new tricks! She has tried her paw at agility, mastering the tunnel and the jumps. She has so much fun, and she looks like a pup again when she's running the course.

Lacy's always been wonderful with her feline friends, and she's been practicing her canine manners during her training. Lacy would love a home with some kitty pals and perhaps an older, well-mannered canine companion.

Lacy has been in the HOPE Program for 10 weeks without a single application. It's unbelievable that a dog this sweet and loving would still be homeless, and we're hoping she won't have to spend yet another holiday season in limbo, wondering when her luck will change.

Lacy is available for adoption through Starfish to the Sea Animal Rescue and the HOPE program.

For details, please visit www.hopedogs.org or call (717) 379-2511.

Gifts that Give

| | Comments (0)

The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance will be participating in "Gifts that Give," South Central Pennsylvania's Alternative Gift Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 15, at Central Pennsylvania College Conference Center, College and Valley Roads, Summerdale, PA.

"Gifts that Give" offers holiday shoppers an alternative to traditional gift-giving, and is the perfect way to get into the real spirit of the season. It is a way to find gifts that not only honor special people on your gift list, but also help others who are not on anyone's gift list.

For example, think of a person on your gift list who would be pleased if you provided help to a homeless animal in their honor. That person will receive a handsome card telling them about your gift. In addition to the opportunity to help some wonderful nonprofits, there will be live music and refreshments.

For more information on CPAA, visit www.cpaa.info.

Dog park plan abandoned

| | Comments (0)

The West York Borough Council voted to keep Eberton Park, in the 1500 block of West Poplar Avenue, as it is and not change its use to a dog park.

The council previously had approved for a committee to explore turning Eberton into a dog park to be dedicated in memory of Abbey, Toby and Sparkles, former pets of West York Councilwoman Shelly Metzler. However, a meeting designed to get public input brought out residents who opposed the dog park.

At last week's council's meeting, Metzler said she would return donations for the park because she does not intend to find a different place for it.

Council President Shawn Mauck said incidents of hate mail, phone calls and threats against Metzler are being investigated.

A new committee was formed to erect a sign at Eberton Park.

Avocado can poison your pet

| | Comments (2)

From ASPCA.org:

A slice of avocado may be the perfect addition to your sandwich, but it can have serious consequences for our feathered and furry friends. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, IL, pet poisonings from avocado and avocado-based foods like guacamole are a consistent risk.

In 2008, the Center managed 115 cases involving ingestions of avocado, and though an overwhelming 83 percent of those incidents involved dogs, the most devastating effects were seen in birds, rabbits and certain large animals like horses and cattle.

A native of Central and South America, avocado (Persea americana) is a subtropical tree that produces a pear-shaped fruit prized for its high fat content, vitamin-rich "meat" and smooth texture. Unfortunately, the fruit also contains a toxin called persin that's harmful to animals, especially in large quantities.

"Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark all contain the toxic principle known as persin," said Dana Farbman, CVT, Senior Manager of Professional Communications at APCC.
