Through December

  • Make holiday memories by hanging an ornament on the York County SPCA’s Christmas tree in memory of, or in honor of, your pet(s). Cost is $6 per ornament/per pet; there are new designs again this year. To order, call 717-764-6109 or visit the shelter at 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, Manchester Township (York, PA).

 

Dec 2

  • In an effort to keep dogs in their homes, the SPCA of York County offers free dog training with Deb Sangrey on the first Monday of each month. Registration is not required, just bring your dog to the SPCA of York County, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, Manchester Township. Training will be offered Dec. 2. Dec. 6

  • West York Feline Rescue is selling Sammie Subs for a fundraiser. They are 12-inch subs and cost $5 each. Choices are turkey-and-cheese, ham-and-cheese, and American. Orders must be placed by Dec. 6 and the subs will be delivered Dec. 16. To place an order or to get a form to sell subs at your company, call Lori Uhrich at 717-586-7959. The subs are Turkey and cheese, ham and cheese and American.

 

Dec. 7

  • Personalized Greyhounds Inc. adopters and greyhounds will be greeting families from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Tractor Supply, 901 Loucks Road, York, PA. Adopters will answer questions about living with retired racers and how to adopt greyhounds as pets. Greyhounds will be on hand for wags and kisses.   • Heavenly Paws Animal Shelter will offer pet photos with Santa Claws from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at PetSmart in Hanover, PA. Bring your own camera to take pictures of your pet with Santa. A $5 donation is requested.
  • Castaway Critters will offer pet photos with Santa Claws from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at PetSmart, 5900 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA. Bring your own camera to take pictures of your pet with Santa. A $5 donation is requested.
  • Castaway Critters will offer pet photos with Santa from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Petco, 5125 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA. Cost is $8, which includes photo and frame.
  • York-area Petco stores will offer pet photos with Santa from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Cost is $8.95 for a 4×6 print in a keepsake frame. Proceeds go to Petco Foundation to help pets in need.

 

Dec. 14

  • Shop at Five Below, 1245 Carlisle Road, West Manchester Township (York, PA), from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and 10 percent of the sale will benefit West York BARk (Borough Animal Response krew). You’ll need to print out this coupon and bring it with you.

Dec. 15 and 22

  • York County SPCA’s third annual Luminary Festival will be Dec. 15 and 22 at the shelter, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, Manchester Township (York, PA). Purchase a luminary in honor of, or in memory of, your pet, then walk the “path of light” around the shelter on Dec. 15 and 22 and feel the calm presence of community spirit and goodwill thorughout the animal-loving community. While at the shelter, stop inside to share your pet stories and enjoy cookies, coffee and hot chocolate. Luminaries are $20 and may be purchased at the shelter.       Dec. 21

      • Castaway Critters’ Glimmer of Hope: A Holiday Open House Benefiting Sick and Abandoned Cats and Dogs will be noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, PA. The event will include music, entertainment and refreshments; as well as beer, wine and Fuzzy Navels with bartending brothers Stewart and Dayton Holmes. A $25 minimum donation per person is requested at the door. For details, visit http://www.castawaycritters.org.

      December — all month

      • The Nobody’s Cats Foundation is holding its quarterly food drive to collect dry and canned cat food for caretakers of free-roaming cat colonies throughout the region that are participating in Trap Neuter Return. Sustaining colonies is particularly difficult for caretakers during the cold-weather months. Dry and canned cat food in any amount and of any brand can be donated during the month of December at the following locations, with all food distributed locally:

        Adams County

        Myers Floors and Interiors, 6185 Baltimore Pike, Littlestown; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm

        Valley View Farm Market, 1937 Baltimore Pike, East Berlin; Monday-Friday, 12 noon – 6 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm

        Cumberland County

        Teg’s Canine Clippery, 335 Bridge Street, New Cumberland; Monday-Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm

        Lancaster County

        Commonwealth Code Inspection Service, 176 Doe Run Road, Manheim; Monday-Friday, 6 am to 2 pm

        Businesses are encouraged to become part of the food drive network for quarterly drives held in March, June, September, and December. Food is distributed locally via foundation volunteers and supporters and all promotion and support materials are provided. Locations are especially needed in Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon and York Counties to serve the many needy caretakers in these counties.
