ASPCA names 2007 Humane Heroes

| | Comments (1)

aspca.gifIn June, the ASPCA asked animal lovers all over the country to nominate real-life heroes, both human and furry, who deserved to be honored for their acts as part of the 2007 Humane Awards Program.

Among the five devoted humans and two remarkable pets who will be honored in New York City for their heroic (and humble) feats are:

pawicon5.gif Winnie, a 14-year-old domestic shorthair, who meowed wildly to wake her sleeping family members as toxic carbon monoxide fumes filled their home

pawicon5.gif Toby, a two-year-old golden retriever, who saved his human companion from choking by performing a modified Heimlich maneuver on her.

pawicon5.gif Tony La Russa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, whose nonprofit group — the Animal Rescue Foundation — educates the public about companion animals through its many outreach programs in Northern California.

See more Humane Heroes at ASPCA.org.

The Humane Awards Luncheon ceremony will take place Nov. 1 at Rockefeller Center’s historic Rainbow Room in New York City.

ASPCA Photo Contest

From the ASPCA:

What does your canine pal do when he has his “druthers”? You know—when he has space, time and perhaps permission to set his own agenda for a bit? Like during the day when no one’s home, or out in the backyard when he thinks no one’s looking…

In honor of October as ASPCA Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month, the ASPCA is asking you to take a step back from being a high-powered pooch parent and just observe. Catch your pet in the act of being himself — and send us your best shots for consideration in our annual photo contest! The top ten winners will receive an ASPCA Prize Pack and will be featured on our website.

Visit ASPCA online for complete contest rules and to submit your photo today. Need inspiration? Check out last year’s winners and read tips from Traer Scott—one of the ASPCA's favorite dog photographers and this year’s contest judge—on how to take awesome pix of your pets. ASPCA Community Leader of 2007 Contest
