The season of bowl giving

So the Nittany Lions didn't get to do some post-Christmas shopping in Miami, courtesy of the BCS national championship game.

Just a field goal away in frozen Iowa City, right?

An undefeated regular season would have, among other things, entitled them to a $300, NCAA-allowed shopping spree at a hotel suite stocked with Sony electronics.

Not a bad perk. (Those lucky Oklahoma Sooners and Florida Gators also get a Tourneau watch, Crocs and an Ogio duffle bag).

Bowl season means free gift season, too.

Even the piddly, brand-new EagleBank Bowl in D.C. handed out Sony 8-inch portable DVD players, a wool hat and a custom-woven afghan (one out of three ain't bad).

Things immediately take an upturn, though, with the New Mexico Bowl where everyone got an RCA video camcorder, an Oakley watch, beanie and backpack, an Ogio travel bag and a subscription to ESPN The Magazine.

For playing in the New Mexico Bowl!

Even the Liberty Bowl stepped up with mini-camcorders, Fossil watches, Fossil sunglasses and Armor Gear backpacks.

And those Nittany Lions?

The Rose Bowl brings them a Sony DVD camcorder, a Fossil watch, Oakley sunglasses, an Ogio backpack and that subscription to ESPN The Magazine.
