Lions up for Dapper Dan awards

Nittany Lion center A.Q. Shipley and quarterback Daryll Clark are nominees for the prestigious Pittsburgh-area Dapper Dan Awards.

Shipley, a graduating senior, is one of six nominees for the 2008 Sportsman of the Year. Clark, a senior this fall, is one of four nominees for the Breakthrough Athlete award.

And Penn State senior volleyball player Christa Harmotto is one of four nominees for Sportswoman of the Year.

Winners will be announced on Feb. 8. Fans can vote for all three categories by visiting http://biz.post-gazette.com/DapperDan.

The voting deadline is Feb. 7.

Shipley, from Corapolis, Pa., was an All-American who was named the top center in college football this past season. He is going against Pitt men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon, Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, Penguins coach Michel Therrien and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Clark, of Youngstown, Ohio, was a first-team All-Big Ten pick and was the runner-up for Big Ten MVP. Clark is in the running against Pitt basketball forward DeJuan Blair, Pirates outfielder Nate McLouth and Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley.

Harmotto, from Aliquippa, is a middle hitter for the national champs.
