Smith wins title, misses record

Penn State recruit Devon Smith, the diminutive sprinter and football star, won another state gold medal in track and field on Tuesday.

But he missed out on a coveted national record.

Smith, who just signed his letter of intent to play football for the Nittany Lions, took the Maryland state indoor title in the 55 meters in 6.37 seconds.

His best this winter, though, was 6.21 seconds and this was his last shot to break the national mark of 6.14 set in 1978 by New Mexico's LaNoris Marshall and matched last year by D'Angelo Cherry of Georgia.

A Maryland running Web site mentioned how Smith (5-foot-7, 145 pounds) only finished second in his heat and may have been bothered by some sort of minor injury.
