Smith is No. 1 in the nation

Devon Smith was touted as arguably the fastest high schooler in the nation to sign on to play college football last month.

Is any more evidence needed now for the new Nittany Lion?

Smith, a senior at Westlake High in Waldorf, Md., just ran a national-best 6.63 seconds in the 60 meters at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston last weekend. He beat out North Carolina's Torrance Hunt (6.72 seconds), Florida's Dentarius Locke (6.81) and Virginia's Earl House (6.83).

Smith also is the nation's best at the 55 meters where he won a Maryland state indoor title this winter in 6.37 seconds. His fastest 55 meter time is 6.21 seconds, not too far off the national high school record of 6.14.

Smith is 5-foot-7 and about 145 pounds and is expected to be a slot receiver and kickoff and possibly punt returner for Penn State when he enrolls this summer.
