Legends come in all shapes and forms, and Penn State lost another one this week.
Mickey Bergstein was more than the former radio voice for the Nittany Lion football and men’s basketball teams. He had a 72-year relationship with the university before he died at 89 on Valentine’s Day.
Bergstein was a 1943 Penn State graduate from the Smeal College of Business before joining the Marines in World War II and receiving five commendation medals and being awarded a Purple Heart.
He returned to State College and became general manager of WMAJ Radio and helped Penn State set up its first football radio network in 1955. He handled play-by-play duties in the 1950s and returned to the job from 1964-70.
He also hosted the weekly Quarterback Club Luncheon for many years.
Meanwhile, he taught in Penn State’s business school for 50 years.
