Linebacker U.’s latest: Will Mike Mauti or Gerald Hodges be voted the best?

There are plenty of reasons why Mike Mauti and Gerald Hodges are the most dynamic leaders of the Penn State defense. 


Gerald Hodges’ ability to play pass defense helped get him recognized as one of the top linebackers in the nation.


Some proof? 

They are now the only two teammates as semifinalists for the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s top linebacker. 

Each has earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards this season (Mauti has two). 

Hodges is 11th in the Big Ten in tackles (54) to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a team-high four pass breakups.

Mauti in fifth in the Big Ten in tackles (65). He also has 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a team-high three interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

