Storify: Nittany Lions wrap up a season like no other

It’s been a tumultuous season for the Nittany Lions. Learning the system of a new coach … Jerry Sandusky’s sentencing … unprecedented NCAA sanctions, including a four-year bowl ban … Then having top players leave because of those sanctions. Throughout the season, the players who stayed worked hard and came together as no team before them had.

The Nittany Lions played their final game of the season Saturday in Beaver Stadium, a 24-21 overtime victory against Wisconsin. Before, during and after the game, fans, family, alumni and teammates celebrated this year’s senior class for their hard work and dedication.

Here’s a Storify look at the kind sentiments and words of thanks offered to the Nittany Lions as their season — and careers — came to an end …

Penn State wraps up a season like no other

Penn State wrapped up its season Saturday in Beaver Stadium, beating Wisconsin, 24-21, in overtime. It was a challenging season for the Nittany Lions, from getting a new coach, to the NCAA sanctions, to the transfers. The team came together and overcame these obstacles under coach Bill O’Brien, finishing the season at 8-4.

While most fans were happy just to celebrate Penn State’s success, some couldn’t help but revel in USC’s mediocre season. It seems there is some lingering bitterness after former Nittany Lion standout Silas Redd bolted for Southern California in the wake of the NCAA sanctions against PSU.
@sportsandra……Hey Silas Redd, aren’t you glad you left Penn State(8-4)to go to USC(7-5) to play for National Championship….OOPS!!Jason Guillorn
Didn’t think of this til now … Who’d have thought when Silas Redd transferred that SC would need to beat No. 1 to match Penn St.’s record?Chris Magill
RT @sportspickle: USC finishes 7-5. Penn State goes 8-4. Whoopsies, Silas Redd.Kyle Taylor
RT @AmandaLGifford: Guarantee you when Silas Redd transferred to USC there was no way he thought PSU would have a better record than his Trojans at years end.Robert Howard
RT @cdtguy: Zach Zwinak: 203 carries, 1,000 yards. Silas Redd: 150 carries, 841 yards. Penn State: 8-4. USC: 7-5.Jon McKee

On hand to watch the Nittany Lions close out their season were future members of the team, including Adam Breneman, Christian Hackenberg, Brendan Mahon, Garrett Sickels and Curtis Cothran. These athletes admit that they can’t wait to suit up for the Blue and White, but the fans seem to be pretty enthusiastic, too!
