Officials say Penn State schedule to remain the same, after all

It now appears as if Penn State’s 2013 football schedule will remain in tact after rumors circulated of a potential change.

Since New Year’s Day, Rhode Island football players tweeted about playing in Beaver Stadium this fall and Rams’ head coach Joe Trainer said such a game was a “strong possibility.”

It had been rumored that the switch would involve the Virginia Cavaliers, who are scheduled to play at Penn State on Sept. 14. The winless Rams would replace Virginia in an effort to lessen Penn State’s non-conference schedule strength during the NCAA sanctions.

But then Rhode Island athletic director Thorr Bjorn told the Providence Journal that the Rams would not play Penn State this year.

In response to the rumors, Penn State sports information director Jeff Nelson said there would no schedule changes this season.

Virginia assistant athletic director Jim Daves declined to comment on the subject.
