Several national media outlets are reporting that James Franklin, indeed, will become Penn State’s new head football coach.

The Langhorne, Pa. native became one of the nation’s most desired head coaching commodities after turning the long-suffering Vanderbilt football program into winners in the powerful SEC.

He would become the Nittany Lions’ 16th head coach, just more than a week after Bill O’Brien left abruptly for the NFL’s Houston Texans late on New Year’s Eve.

However, Penn State officials have yet to confirm Franklin’s hire.

Word of Franklin’s expected agreement began streaming in through social media outlets around noon, with Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com, Brett McMurphy of ESPN, Sports Illustrated and others all tweeting that an announcement is forthcoming, according to their sources.

Dan Wetzel, of Yahoo Sports, said this on Twitter: “James Franklin to Penn State is a big time hire by the Nittany Lions. Thought he’d end up at Texas.”

And there was this about Franklin, the former two-time Maryland assistant, from Ton Dienhart of the Big Ten Network:

“Don’t you wonder how Maryland feels after letting James Franklin walk after it didn’t want to honor his head-coach-in-waiting deal?”

York County’s Randy Edsall ended up with that Maryland head coaching job in January of 2011.

Franklin wasn’t my first choice, but it looks like he is the one coming in…so I will support him 105%. If he quits in less than 6 years I’ll forever drone ridicule on him. If he stays beyond 6 years…I’ll sing his praises regardless of his win / loss record. Now get him up to State College & get him going on setting up his staff, hopefully INCLUDING Larry Johnson.

Yes, I believe Penn State made the best and the right hire with Franklin. I also believe he wants to prove he can win a national title at Penn State, and I don’t think he will leave until the program is at that level again. Whether that takes him three years or six years.
