The big first practice

| | Comments (0)

It sounds impressive, but the first day of practice wasn't much of anything.

The York Revolution eased into the season.

First-day manager Chris Hoiles talked to the team -- briefly.

And then the team went through some basic fielding drills. After that a little infield work, a little outfield work, and some batting practice against live pitching.

But the field doesn't look as crowded as it should.

Although the Revolution had 29 players on their spring training roster headed into this week, only 23 are in uniform.

* First baseman Omar Garcia was reassigned to the Road Warriors.

* Five other players are awaiting the final step in the visa process before they can leave their respective countries. C Fleming Baez; C Luis Taveras; 1B Willie Matos; OF Kaz Tanaka and SS Rayner Bautista are not expected to join the team until May 3 -- one day before the season opener.

That leaves the team with five infielders and four outfielders.

So the big competition this week will be between the 13 pitchers trying to earn one of the 11 roster spots.
