Pitching troubles

Former major league pitcher Steve Smyth (1-1, 6.63 ERA) left the Revolution prior to Sunday's game against Newark to return to the Mexican League.

Smyth told the team he hopes to return to the Revs later this summer when the Mexican League season ends. Smyth pitched for Laguna of the Mexican League earlier this year.

Smyth helped solidify the Revs pitching staff in June, providing the team with a steady arm after York lost Ryan Baerlocher to the Atlanta Braves' organization and Matt Ford suffered an injury.

The Revs also expect to lose the services of starter Dave Gil for at least one start. Gil injured his foot in Saturday's game. He appeared to take a line drive off his instep. He is scheduled to be examined by a doctor on Monday, according to manager Chris Hoiles. The coaching staff fears Gil may have broken his foot, which would keep him out of the lineup at least three to five weeks.

And yet more bad news camde down Sunday. Third baseman Matt Dryer is day-to-day after bruising the right side of his chest when he dived headfirst into first base Saturday night.
